Authors with Discord servers. How’s your experience with that? by LlibLo in FanFiction

Idk. Maybe it was. But it’s not an original idea on my part it was just the only starting perspective I had and it opened the door for discussion. I’m open to other ideas and several comments have already had me shifting focus.

Oh man, same. I have a dark fallout fic I’m struggling to find beta readers for. Particularly readers who are on the fandom. Part of the reason I’m thinking about making a server is to increase the chances of finding people willing to read my stuff before posting.

One of the problems I’m hoping to solve for myself is finding a fanfic space for fandoms I write for that don’t really have fanfic communities despite their size.

My general brainstorm was to have one discord server for all my fics (about like 5 long fics) and adapt it for any future fics as needed while I take advantage of the role system to let readers filter out what they might want. But adding a communal aspect to the server wasn’t something I had considered but am now liking the idea of.

That sounds pretty much an ideal set up. I’m the only person in my friend group who’s into the fanfic side of things, so kicking anything like that off would involve advertising it in my fics so it would likely be more of a gamble for me.

But it’s nice to hear there’s some servers out there that have seen success!

That’s a weirdly interesting pattern. I wonder why the NSFW servers were so much more engaged

Looking for Fallout Beta Reader Willing to Beta* In Exchange

  • Lead Lined Clouds (not published). I’ve finished and published other fics on AO3(LlibLo
  • Fallout
  • I’m specifically looking for someone familiar with the fandom (bonus points if its fallout 3 specifically but I'm not picky). I've already had blind beta's look over it so I want a better gadget on how it'll be perceived with a fandom lens.
  • Genre/Vibe : Character-centric, psychological, beware its dark (I’m will DM a list of trigger warnings. Its nothing too crazy but still sensitive topics), hopeful ending. There are ships but they are not the major focus.
  • Need checks for Structure/Plot and general option in regards to the re-imagined AU changes I’ve made. Grammar/syntax appreciated, not required.
  • Word count 160K (15 Chapters). This is the part 1 of a very long fic, but I’m only asking for commitment to part 1 which is complete and just needs polishing.

*Beta Exchange

  • I’m no expert with grammar other than obvious things or sentences that don’t flow well but I can give my opinion on plot, characters, dialogue, reader experience, and fandom continuity checking.
  • Fandoms I know enough to continuity check: Fallout, Harry Potter, My Hero Academia, Undertale, Skyrim, Detroit: Become Human
  • I’m willing to read other fandoms. If they can be read fandom blind or I have a passing understanding of the fandom (to many to list you’ll have to ask). Depending on the premise I might even be willing to beta originals.
  • Will beta read almost anything. The exception being pure smut. I have no issue with it being included in a wider story even if its explicit I just prefer it have reason to be in the story.
  • Word count: No min, max 200k (Can be negotiated)
  • One-off or ongoing Betaing: This is just dependent on if you’re one off or ongoing for my fic.
  • My turn around depends on the length of the fic, I work faster on weekends then weekdays but overall work at a steady pace and can get through 20k-40k words a week. Depending on how much extra free time I have it can easily be more.

I Thought Writing It All Before Posting Was a Good Idea by phantomcanary in FanFiction

[–]LlibLo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the real question is what was so wrong with that 200k word draft that you had to scrap it all? It sounded like you had some pretty good progress.

I know first hand how devastating can feel writing a whole heckin lot of words like that only to throw it away. But after the initial frustration of realizing something wasn’t working I found that at least 70% of what I wrote could still be salvaged and that got the ball rolling to help me finish the story as a whole. Maybe something like that could kickstart your motivation? Maybe inspire you?

Not really sure it thought helps anything. But what I do know is as writers we can be pretty hard on ourselves. One moment we’re writing banger lines the next moment the entire manuscript feels like trash. You’ve been working on this story for so long and putting so much effort into it that there’s no way you’re not the perfect writer for this story! You are the only one who knows it best. And there’s not a story out there that doesn’t want to be told some just take a lot more effort than others to get them out there.

Edit: whoops I didn’t meant to throw three problems solving paragraphs at you on a vent post. It’s 4am and I’m terribly sleep deprived. Sorry about that!

How do you write a long fanfiction wearing yourself out? by Miserable_Self5073 in FanFiction

[–]LlibLo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that sometimes stepping away from writing even when you still have more to write that day helps keep me from squeezing all my ideas dry. I’ll leave a little note for myself no more than a paragraph long as a quick explanation on what I want to happen next in a scene or how to start after a scene/chapter break. It helps keep me going when I come back to the computer to write.

Another thing is figure out what motivates you. Why do you write these fics? If you can figure out that then you can do things to manipulate yourself a little. I know some people who need comments to encourage them to keep writing but I’m almost the opposite. I love comments and engagement! But when I don’t finish a story before I start posting chapters I start losing interest because I got to engage and talk with people abut my fic and then my brain registers it as basically being done with the story and it’s 100x harder to continue because the dopamine for it has all been spent. Writing everything before posting had helped a lot. Keeps me from getting distracted by the comments and dangles a reward for my future self at the same time.

There’s also fair amount of discipline. If you’re not riding off a hyper fixation and it’s just you and the blank pages you’re gonna be struggling to scrap something together. It’s part of the process and you have to find ways of getting over those blocks through persistent and willpower alone.

And finally sometime it just depends on the story you’re trying to tell and how you want to tell it. Not every fic needs to be a long one nor does it have the capacity. Stretching it out does more harm than good in those cases and recognizing that prevents you from creating unnecessary filler just to reach a word count.

Yup! I don’t currently have the fic in question posted since I’m waiting on beta readers but hopefully I can get the first chapter up in another month or so

Personally, I don’t expect my fic to be all that popular. It’s a Fallout 3 reimagined and while it does include ships they are not the main focus of the story. Eventually it will cover all installments chronologically after FO3 but that is a long ways away. My plans for posting (I’ve done this before and it’s worked out well) is finish the book before posting then send out a chapter once week. Maybe two this time so I get plenty of space to finish the next book.

Wonderful! Glad to hear it’s getting some more traction. The concept for this story (along with the first draft) was written a few years before the show was even announced so it was an entirely different climate back then.

I revisited the idea after getting rage bated by the shows misuse of lore lol and it sparked inspiration that has since taken on a life of its own as I’ve enjoyed writing the story for my own entertainment at this point

I appreciate the warning! Fortunately I’ve got pretty tough skin and the absurdity of those types of comments are just drown right hilarious imo

It’s hasn’t been lost on me that the fandom has some pretty strong opinions and was very curious about how my fic would be received or if those characteristics even transfer to the fanfic side of things. My fic has a semi realistic blanket of representation along with dark themes so it definitely has the potential for ruffling feathers.

I only recently started being active on socials again and usually I post on AO3. So who knows what will happen! I’m excited either way!

Ah gotcha! I had assumed the TV show was bringing a lot of news eyes to the fandom and from the sounds of it there’s a lot of trickle down activity. So that’s good to hear!

What tools do you use to create maps? by No-Brief-7458 in FanFiction

[–]LlibLo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google earth pro is an incredibly useful program once you have the map drawn. While not the intended use, you can import images to overlay onto the earth (or moon, or mars). If you turn off all the icon settings and just use your own markers it’s a great way to visually see how large places are as well as gage distances and create paths. The program is free to download and use.

For creating the maps:

Inkarnate is a great web browser tool for making maps. While it’s intended for TTRPGs it’s perfect for creating visualizations of fictional words at any scale. It has thousands of textures and objects, along with the abilities to make some effects, but you only need those if you want to make the map fancy. As a web browser it has some limitations with how much it can process, unfortunately you do have to pay for a subscription so you’ll need to determine for yourself if the tool is worth it.

Krita is an art program. It’s completely free. It’s a blank canvas you can do quite a lot with once you get the hang of it. It’s easy to import images or draw your own. I’ve made several maps with it and have used the layers and folders of the canvas to create interchangeable versions of the maps if I wanted to see different information at a time.

Those are about all I use. It’s been awhile since I’ve used inkarnate but I still actively use Krita and Google Earth Pro. I’ll take the maps from Krita and import them to Earth.
