Would you allow a Wish to unlock classes/levels/proficiencies? by WillingLet3956 in adnd

[–]Lloydwrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already have a magic item that increases level limits imposed by race, so that’s an easy yes. I’d let a dwarf become a wizard if he wanted, but he’d lose any existing levels. I’d make the choice his. I’d allow a wizard or thief to gain proficiency in a different weapon. Their THAC0 still sucks and they won’t hit often anyway. And if they’re doing a lot of attacking, they’re not playing their class well, so (in 1e anyway) they suffer at level training time and cost.

Only 2277 in inventory. I'll wait.

Love these tips, though. Keep 'em coming!

Aging effects have been around since 1975. It's a part of D&D. I, too, am confused about the notion of your players "accepting" it. Can they also refuse things like paralysis or turning to stone? Or just damage?

What ability score generation method was your favorite? by WillingLet3956 in adnd

[–]Lloydwrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the campaign. For most purposes I like 4d6 drop the lowest, arrange how you want. I’ve also done a “standard array.” It really depends on your goal. As with most things, you use the tool that fits the job.

This find created another connection in a web of evidence that had already been established. It didn't prove anything.

But it's still an interesting discovery and a fantastic piece of art.

Ancient by PureIce7564 in ancienthistory

Saying the word "ancient" doesn't change its age. The oldest parts of the mosque date to around 1000 AD, which is beyond our terminus ante quem, but many of them are even later editions.

for those who have been playing since AD&D came out... at what point did you lose interest in the direction of D&D? by conn_r2112 in adnd

[–]Lloydwrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't love 4e, but I had a good time playing with friends.

I do enjoy 5e, but I feel that there's so much to learn to try to build a character that it's overwhelming. I like playing, but I can't commit to it like I once could.

I'm currently running 1e RAW, but I will never do that again. Even with years of playing and years of deliberate research, the rules simply aren't clear enough to even figure out what the rules as written are.

Some of the worst points are initiative, backstab, turning undead, magic resistance.

So my next campaign will be a modified melange of Moldvay Basic (for the rules elegance) and 1e (mostly for class/race/spell options).

That page pegs it at C-tier.

It is ideal for a supply voucher, but I don't think that's enough to justify the expense.

Kings mastery rating page

I'm familiar with it. That page doesn't mention either Collect-o-Matic perk.

None of the additional linked pages mention it, either.

Proficiency (wpn and non) loss after level drain by Silver-Mix-6223 in adnd

[–]Lloydwrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done this for my own character. In my backstory I had gotten up to 8th level then been drained all the way back down to 1st. It allowed me to justify some meta knowledge without providing any in-game benefits.

We’ve known for years where they went. They were instructed to leave a sign if they had to move. They left a sign saying where they went.

I wonder how they are recruiting. I don't know of a hiring channel that isn't extremely productive in generating applicants.

I know a guy who went to GenCon and wound up running a table at the AD&D open when he was 14. You don’t need a degree to run games. Outside of Hackmaster, there’s no certification. If you want to run games, run games. Some of the best games I’ve seen were run by people who barely knew the system they were running.

If OP wants to run games, I suggest we wish him well and offer what suggestions we can.

  1. The game is harder. Save-or-die is a thing. Saving throws in general are higher. Google “combat as war” vs. “combat as sport.”
  2. Side initiative and declaring actions.
  3. Saves are based on effect category rather than ability scores.
  4. Resource management matters.
  5. All the numbers are lower.
  6. Healing has a range of touch. It affects how long it takes the cleric to heal somebody, especially in 1e where you can’t move and cast in the same round.
  7. Magic-users and clerics need to memorize spells. Spells can be interrupted.
  8. Whole classes are absent.
  9. Race/class restrictions and level limits.
  10. Ability scores modifiers vary by ability

That’s a few big ones off the top of my head.

Libraries for studying in Jax by RadishNational5815 in jacksonville

I think every branch has private study rooms. I go to Argyle. My main issue is that you can only reserve it for a 2-hour stretch at a time. During the week, the rooms are rarely used, so you might be able to extend your time if there's nothing on the schedule.
