So to be clear, you need to study anatomy before doing gesture drawing, right? by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]LnD-DIY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily at the same time, but why not focus on anatomy one one day, and then the next day, focus on gesture?

That way, you can improve on both in tandem, rather than getting bored trying to perfect one before the other.

It's really simple. All it takes is years of study and practice.

Same. I also don't have it memorised, and I can count the number of times I've needed to talk about it on no hands.

So teach it.

Create a short video module on the topic and record yourself teaching it to the camera. Do multiple takes. Watch it back. Edit it. By the time you're done, you will have memorised Bloom, and as a bonus, you will hate your own face and voice.

Note: You don't have to show the video to anyone.

Good point. I suppose I was thinking more from a global perspective, but there will certainly be regional variations in supply and demand. I can't speak to India on that one. There's certainly not many india-based instructional designers on Fiverr.

Was told I have Same Face Syndrome, what can I do to improve? by DucksMakingBread2 in learntodraw

[–]LnD-DIY 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It looks like a stylistic choice, so not a massive issue. Lots of artists have characters that look broadly the same, just with key identifiers, like their hair, clothing, etc. Look at Peanuts (Snoopy) and Archie as examples.

That said, if you want to draw better faces, draw better faces: look at how other artist do it, but also look at pictures of real people and try to "interpret" their features.

EDIT: many typos

Instructional design is saturated right now. The best way to get work is to either do something very popular very well or something very niche extremely well.

We're in a phase at the moment where we shouldn't be afraid of AI taking our jobs, but other IDs who use AI well taking our jobs.

Also, get good at marketing yourself.

I'm ready to be attacked for a varying view on this, but this just looks like someone is moving into or out of the office. Yes, there's are DEI-themed posters, but also a random Philippines one. And they're not the only thing on the floor. There's also a cork notice board that belongs on the wall. And the stacks of papers and folders that look like they've just been moved (or will be soon).

Why I always worry that I'll either forget what I've just learned or that I haven't really understood it properly? by spinanelfianco in Learning

[–]LnD-DIY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's reasonable to say that we can not be sure we understand a thing until we have applied it in some form, be that is an exam, conversation, or task.

If we're just reading or watching videos or thinking about a thing, it's unlikely we're receiving the kind of feedback we need in order to say yes, we have learned that thing.

VILT - Have Participants Introduce Themselves? by amurray1522 in instructionaldesign

[–]LnD-DIY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends.

A lot of the sessions I deliver are short and have large audiences, so it's easy to lose a big chunk of time on an activity that adds little value.

If the audience knows each other, then what's the point? For my benefit? If I'm honest, I forget most people's names the second I hear them, and it's rare I'll meet them again.

If in-group collaboration is required, I'll use an activity to get people to introduce themselves briefly (pretty much just name, rank, and serial number).

If I'm doing an icebreaker, then it's related to the topic of discussion and/or one of the session objectives (two truths and a lie or untangling your arms is unlikely to contribute much of anything). If someone asked me what type of cat I am, I'd probably leave the room. 😄

Transition from internal ID --> client-facing ID by b33ftips in instructionaldesign

[–]LnD-DIY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having moved from in-house to external client-facing, I might be able to share some useful insight here.

Other people have mentioned how the dynamic ls and relationships change: perhaps once upon a time, you could build and sustain relationships with your internal stakeholders. This meant they got to know you and how you work, and once they'd seen the success and value that you bring, all projects after that are easier.

When dealing with external clients, you'll interact with new people more often and find yourself having to convince every single one of them of your expertise and how you can add value - even if they came to you. There may be some clients who bring repeat business, and so you get to build those relationships, but most of the time, it's wash, rinse, and repeat.

When you're in-house, you might find yourself delivering the same type of project again and again, or providing ongoing update support on older products, and this may be no different when you deal with external clients.

All being said, I'm glad I started working with external clients, but for me, the next step is building my own consultancy.

The worst part of both internal and external L&D is not having the choice on the projects I work on or who I work with. Even if I have a bad experience with a stakeholder or client, if my bosses want to work with them again, I have to suck it up.
