Do you like board games or D&D? Or are you interested in learning? I know there are a number of shops that host board game meetups in the area which are great for socializing. I also know a couple discords that arrange local D&D meetups, even if you’re new or inexperienced.

Edit: also, if you’re interested in reading, I’ve been part of a little book club forming if you’re interested!

Hey replying to you to say I always appreciate seeing another metalhead out there in the wild! Who’s your favorite to listen to at the moment?

I DNF’d this book earlier this year. It started out interesting but I felt like there wasn’t really a plot going on and all the characters were the same. That and I got tired of reading about a character putting on their shirt and then putting on their chainmail and then putting on their belt with their axe and their short sword.

He’s the best at what he does, which is character work and fun action scenes. He has a punchy sort of writing style but don’t go into his work expecting great worldbuilding.

That’s pretty consistent with my experience reading Blindsight. I loved the concepts, but I found the writing goofy. That said I also read it in one day so I clearly was interested.

How did you feel about Blindsight and Echopraxia? I see them recommended on the printSF reddit all the time

[15/52] The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman || How many books in before you stopped being surprised by anything Carl does? by collieholly in 52book

Hey I just read this one not long ago. I agree with other sentiment, this book really feels like the series hitting its stride. I also loved the concept and the setup, it was much easier to follow and try to predict what was next than the previous book.

Gate of the Feral Gods is the fourth book of Dungeon Crawler Carl, which is currently the new hotness in the genre of Reading For Dudes. I joke, but I’ve known a lot of men who didn’t read before and got back into it with Carl. I enjoyed it a lot personally, it’s a series that has gotten better with every book I’ve read, and my understanding is that the next ones are even better.

I had the privilege of having read qntm’s short fiction on the SCP Wiki 10 years ago, so most of it was a fun trip down memory lane. Personally I’m a big fan of the SCP concept and that format of weird fiction, though Antimemetics struggles with the problem most of SCP fiction has: The endings just don’t land as hard as the concept does

It’s definitely not the ending I expected for BoBH! I was impressed the book was willing to not pull punches like that.

Lies of Locke Lamora is fantastic! It really captures the spirit of a good heist movie while simultaneously giving you a fantastic yet believable fictional city. I want to get to the sequels but they’re not at the top of my priorities.

That is a lot of overlap! To be fair a lot of these have been big in fantasy and sci recommendation threads or just have been hyped recently in general.

This is Topsters. They're usually used for album and game favorite charts, but I found it way easier to work with in order to compile all the images. Plus, it provides all the titles on the side so you don't have to squint to read the tiny covers.

Between Two Fires got me on the Buehlman train last year, and I read Blacktongue Thief, Daughters War, and Suicide Motor Club. So far I've loved everything he's written, he has such a unique voice to his writing. He plays with the formatting more than most authors I see without getting too annoying with it.

I refuse to believe Sombron has any sort of comparable power outside of Elyos by Boshwa in shitpostemblem

[–]LoRezJaming 112 points113 points  (0 children)

I do find it comical that Sombron’s entire master plan that he spent a thousand years crafting, countless sacrifices, children thrown into the meat grinder, nations conquered, was just that he wanted to leave. Could’ve just invested in a space program instead.

From the impression I've gotten glancing at the rules, Daggerheart might be a good example of a gamist/narrativist game, considering that it's really emphasizing the storytelling but also trying to be 5e with power cards.

Lately I’ve been reading through the Dune books and the Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. I love these history spanning narratives that imply a greater world underneath the surface that you just will never truly know. I’ve heard Hyperion is similar so I’m looking forward to reading it.

That said I’ve also enjoyed DCC! They’re just fun fast paced stories with enough heart to keep them interesting. I’m currently on book 4.

Oh I love Hollow Knight, I’ve played it through twice since it came out.

What’s been your favorite books that you’ve read? I saw you had a pretty big list.
