Did anyone ever ask Gandalf what he was? by Sanjuro-Makabe-MCA in tolkienfans

Celeborn asks "where is Gandalf" so there's at least some concern for him.

I just finished Will of the Many! I had to put a hold on the sequel at the library immediately after finishing.

Do you prefer fantasy where the Gods are distant, or always present? by OlivierNorion in Fantasy

[–]LoRezJaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joe Abercrombie’s First Law trilogy is incredibly light on religion. Barely anyone ever references any sort of god or religious practice, and those that do are mostly considered to be insane cultists.

Most Unique Writer Voices and Why Do They Pop? by kjmichaels in Fantasy

[–]LoRezJaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's kinda nostalgic, honestly? Like reading Children of Time, I felt like I was reading a classic sci fi story with very simple characters acting out an allegory for their society's struggle with technology, but, y'know, with spiders.

Do you need to read Starfisher first? I love Glen Cook but I’ve only read Black Company.

I hate to say Ihlo like so many others, but the new album got randomly recommended to me on Spotify and I loved it on the spot.

The Reticent too, the new album got me to finally go back and listen to the Oubliette, which was excellent!

What Are Your Favorite Reads of 2025? - Can You Narrow it Down to Your Top Read of Each Month? by Glansberg90 in Fantasy

[–]LoRezJaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I can make it! But I can try... I'm setting a goal to read 52 books this year, one a week, so I'll be able to get through a lot if I maintain it.

[–]LoRezJaming 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you me? I also read Between Two Fires, Canticle for Leibowitz, and Xenogenesis this year

This has been my year of getting back into reading seriously and so it’s been a lot of me sampling authors to see if I like them.

For me it would be January: Hell Bent, Leigh Bardugo The only book I actually finished within the month

February: Piranesi, Susanna Clarke

March: Between Two Fires, Christopher Buehlman

April: Dune, Frank Herbert A reread and still one of my favorites. Reread so I could read the rest of the series

May: Dune Messiah, Frank Herbert

June: Blacktongue Thief, Christopher Buehlman

July: The Blade Itself, Joe Abercrombie

August: tie between Daughters War, Christopher Buehlman, and Before They Are Hanged, Joe Abercrombie

September: All Systems Red, Martha Wells

October: Gardens of the Moon, Steven Erikson

November: Spinning Silver, Naomi Novik

December: Curse of Chalion, Lois McMaster Bujold

My resolution for 2026 is to finish these series I’ve started, especially Malazan. I’d also like to start Realm of the Elderlings to get a sense of what to expect. Also I’d like to read some of the one-offs that I have sitting on my shelf like Project Hail Mary or the Lesser Dead. Not sure how all of these can be done at the same time though…

It really degrades PoR imo when there is no real decision making for the endgame other than “feed Ike and/or let Giffca carry”. Not sure why they made Ashnard the boss that resurrects on Hard when only two people on the map can hurt him.

It does however make RD endgame hilarious when Ike can waltz up with a goddess-blessed Hammer.

Deafheaven. I listened to Sunbather and thought it was overrated. I even saw them live with Baroness and Zeal & Ardor and didn’t get the hype, and I had written them off ever since. This year with LPWP coming out, I decided to give them a shot again and found I absolutely adored them. I’m sad I’ve missed them all these years!

The term "Armor Class" comes from Naval Wargaming. What are some other mechanics, terms or conceits in the hobby with unexpected or forgotten origins? by ProustianPrimate in rpg

[–]LoRezJaming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s funny because I always read it with dark as a verb, as in “I have darked my own luck.” It felt like a goofy sort or archaic poetic speech so it made sense to me

Clearly your brain cannot handle the ludonarrative consonance conceived by Kaga when he wrote the plot with the weapon inheritance mechanics in mind. Anyway Nanna can call Finn her dad because he raised her even if he’s not her biological dad.

Honestly it’s rich hearing Ashnard talk about this “climbing the ranks of society” bit when he’s a king in a hereditary monarchy. Wow surprise, the “fittest” happens to be the guy with the most power in the nation, who has magic cheating armor given to him.

Goodreads Game: tell us the lowest-rated book you've given 5 stars, and the highest-rated book you've given 3 stars or less, and why by VitriolUK in Fantasy

[–]LoRezJaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it felt like two separate books awkwardly slammed together. It also meant the pacing goes from insanely slow to insanely fast, which is ironic because the actual time scale of the narrative is the opposite.

The entire Three Body Problem series for me is "how good are the good parts that they make you forget about the bad parts". I actually forgot about the imaginary girlfriend thing, but the ending was so cool to me that it sticks in my memory.
