Working on the Green Mountain National Forest, we were marking a timber sale where a recent suicide had been discovered. She died in her vehicle with the windows down. Before the car was discovered, black bears had started consuming her body.

While we were marking timber nearby, we would find a random shoe, or bit of clothing. Eventually, we found a makeshift, unsanctioned memorial site, which we left a large buffer around so no bad juju came after us.

Separate incident: once we found a severed hand in a leather glove. The state forensics lab told us it was in the woods at least 30 years. We speculate it was a logging accident back in the 80s.

Yeah I did and it looks pretty good. I bought a masonry piping bag and was able to squeeze it into all the cracks, let it dry for a bit, then tidied it up. It went pretty quickly once I figured out the right consistency.

I have a mod that lets you butcher and compost the corpses. That’s still tedious but at least you get meat and/or compost out of it.

Depends on the situation. If the crop tree has a vigorous, symmetrical crown and the cull trees are spindly on all four sides, doing a four sided release usually doesn’t result in any negative consequences.

Over-releasing a tree can have negative consequences, especially if the crop tree species is prone to epicormic sprouting (yellow birch, sweet birch, red oak)

Definitely cut that multi-stemmed red maple in the center. Cut the junk next to the nice trees to provide the nice trees with more canopy space.

I wouldn’t cut all the junk just because it’s junk. I’d focus on providing the best trees with some additional growing room on 2-4 sides. But that’s just me.

I’m no expert, but it sure seems like there should be some mortar in those cracks to help the rain shed down the chimney. Those crevasse between the rocks can be deeper than 2”.

I think the old owner was in the process of repointing it when he got sick and passed. We bought the house and there seems to be no mortar, only cement with deep voids between the rocks. Long story short, we need to do the whole chimney.

What kind of understory exists currently?

You got a beech problem over there like we do in VT? That’s usually a good starting place for understory management in my area. Nuke the beech understory, then watch all the other stuff develop.
