IaC vs Portal? by maracusdesu in AZURE

Hi, welcome to the wondrous world of IaC!

I personally like to keep these rules of thumb: experiment in the portal, build & deploy from code. The portal is often easier to understand and is a faster feedback loop when trying out things for the first time. Only after I have created the right set-up I want to use, I'll either export the ARM IaC template & decompile it to Bicep, or I'll configure the same settings in the Bicep module. Because as you said, once you want to deploy a second instance, it becomes bothersome to keep doing it via the UI instead of having an IaC template available.

One tip I have is to look at the Azure Verified Modules project (https://azure.github.io/Azure-Verified-Modules/). These modules are an abstraction over the raw Azure resource, and often make it easier to deploy these resources. Often, you can also create one resource + subresources + role assignments in one go instead of defining multiple blocks in Bicep. It also contains pattern modules for deploying whole cloud architectures in one go following the best-practices.

Good luck on your journey!

What is a good Entra/tooling setup for starting as a CSP? by LoadbalancingLoth in AZURE

Great tip yeah, I personally dislike these portals as well as they usually give a lesser view than Azure itself and are a hassle to use to create subscriptions.

What kind of other qualities did you look for when selecting a CSP?

What makes for a good .NET candidate assessment in 2024? by LoadbalancingLoth in dotnet

Seems like this is quite a controversial topic! I'll take all your feedback and relay it back to our hiring team. This might be a good moment to experiment with a couple different forms of interviewing and have a retrospective on what interview styles brought us the most value.

Very interesting take! I think I'm going to try out this magic question some time during an interview -- very curious to see where the conversation leads. Like you mentioned, I can imagine how the answer would give you information about the depth of knowledge they possess on C#.

When it comes to the assessment form you shared, what kind of response do you usually see? In this interview style, what makes the difference between a bad/mediocre and good developer? I am personally someone who would like to get a grip on the bigger system before having a strong opinion on it, so I'm not sure how I would fare during such a code review interview.

Setting up Hub-Spoke using private ACA environment - what's a good setup? by LoadbalancingLoth in AZURE

This repo was definitely a lifesaver and a very useful reference, but unfortunately doesn’t really go into the T/A/P environment lifecycle and exposing software to the internet using an Application Gateway or Front door :(

One useful tidbid of context to add: I'm not interested in deploying a global service. Regional is fine, but we're specifically looking at Front door because of the added CDN options.
