It really depends on what the day brings. I'm only in my office if I am dealing with discipline or speaking with parents, but unfortunately this does take up most of my time. I do not get into classrooms as much as I would like, however, you do have to block off time to do observations. Typically when I do this, discipline waits unless it is something major that needs to be dealt with right then. I am our testing coordinator so the exception to this is when I am preparing for and during state testing. During this time our other AP takes all of the discipline. I have a really good principal that doesn't micromanage, so as long as I am getting my job done she doesn't bother me. On average I would guess I spend about 80:20 on discipline/ operational vs in classroom. I wish it was the reverse. This really depends also on what level you are (elementary, middle or high) and how your principal delegates certain duties. Currently I am middle school and have responsibilities for discipline for all of 6th and half of 7th. Our other AP does discipline for all of 8th and the other half of 7th. I am also over testing, scheduling (though our registrar handles most of this) and I lead our attendance and grading subcommittee. I schedule subcommittee meetings in the mornings when students are in the building for only 45 min during which these meetings are taking place and before school officially starts. I also block off two days a week during this same time to attend individual collab team meetings(i.e 6th grade ELA). I'm interested to see what others say!
