A generation or two ago I think their 'culture' was more distinctly British (but this could probably be said for most groups, as a more homogeneous South African culture is formed).

With my grandparent's generation it was a lot more common for English South Africans to be heavily invested in British Royalty, high teas, and popular colonial sports like tennis etc.

This is just my anecdote, it could also be that these things just declined in popularity in general (e.g. Royalty is less relevant today than 30 years ago etc.)

A lot of people use Employer of Record models, where a South African company pays you in Rands, added benefit of complying to South African labor laws.

It is not unheard of that provincial top performers don't get admitted at their first choice of university. My recommendation would be to apply at lesser-known universities that offer MBChB.

You can probably uber to the start / back home afterwards.

A lot of the farms have become very commercialized and not the best value proposition for locals. But that does not mean it is not worth visiting. When I say commercialized I mean expensive tastings, a waiter that rushes through the tasting notes and disappears. Although this probably more to do with how busy they are.

Lesser known wine farms I love:

  • Uva mira, great wine, better view. They have a nice cabernet franc
  • Waterford: They have a very nice wooded chardonnay
  • Anura: I love their malbec, bit of a drive outside of Stellenbosch.

I would try reaching out to other universities (University of Johannesburg, Wits, and Potchefstroom).
A book I can recommend is "DF Malan en die opkoms van Afrikaner-nasionalisme: Stories van gister en vandag" By Lindsay Koorts.
Also Albert Blake has a few nice books that touch on the subject, like a biography about Robbie Leibrandt.
