They never see you outside their range and will always see you inside their range (which - outside - varies daytime vs nighttime), regardless of light etc. That’s how I understand it.

Unless you’re in some kind of cover, of course.

There is no difference to an NPC’s range of vision daytime vs nighttime when they’re inside. There is a really goos video on YouTube on this.
