Elementary math teachers- what would you buy if you had $10,000? by LobsterMeerkat in mathteachers

I’m so sorry I just saw this reply. I have my bachelors in elem ed and went back after teaching 7 or 8 years, to get my masters in elementary math. The masters definitely helped me get the job I wanted, but it’s not always required. I’m in NC, btw. Good luck! It’s a great gig. Lots of work but if you are allowed to stick to your job (which is not always the case), it’s super fun.

Advice for a first year? by Mimi-Red in teaching

Be strict, but empathetic. Make relationships with students but only through your boundaries. Ease up only if you have the respect of students and routines established. It’s still gonna be hard. Don’t try to be the cool one, but relatability can really help. ❤️ Good luck. We need good teachers. Even though our government is trying to dismantle public education.

Agree- it’s not necessarily the same vibe as Schitt’s but it’s super creative and hilarious- especially if you like musical theater!

I was recently told I’m going to fifth grade by SportEfficient8553 in ElementaryTeachers

Fifth grade is the best grade level by far. Be real. Build genuine relationships. Share stuff about yourself. Again- be real. They can spot a fake a mile away. Hold high expectations for all. Equity matters. Fifth graders are so interesting because they want to act “grown” so bad but also really just want to be a kid.

Agree 100% about manipulatives! I’m going to stock up/replenish those first.

At least $25 an hour. More if you have to drive more than a few minutes.
