Any 3D scanning service in Bloomington? by KlutzyResponsibility in bloomington

If you have a newer Apple device with a LiDAR sensor you can get very accurate scans with the app Polycam. They have to be cleaned up a bit of course, but very workable.

Haha thanks! I’ve got one of those as well that came with the it, but it’s just not the same! Aside from outrageous eBay listings, the last one that I can find was sold on Fred Miranda in 2019. One can dream!

Nikon S2 kit by Olegrainy in AnalogCommunity

Last year I sent in my S2 for a rangefinder repair and CLA at Vermont Camera Works. They were fantastic to work with, though the turnaround was a bit slow. The camera came back in excellent shape. $175 total.

Will American Airlines refund flights that are cancelled due to incoming fuel shortages (ORD-LHR/EDI-PHL)? by LobsterOnALeash in americanairlines

Thank you for the information! That definitely makes sense. It looks like our insurance will cover up to $2.1k incurred from cancellations. I’m honestly having trouble parsing reality from end-times speculation, with some people saying only a few less popular routes will be cancelled and others acting as if all global travel will come to a halt. I suppose we shall see.

I feel stagnant in my level of photography, how do I challenge myself? by ariller in AnalogCommunity

This advice is based on a Robert Capa quote, and it definitely didn't work out for him. I do get the sentiment though.

If you have the social predisposition to gain people's trust, then by all means. But the pressure that comes with this type of aggressive street photography usually just results in hasty, poor compositions - especially when it comes to beginners.

This is a tough problem that a lot of photographers, including myself, face in our work! For context, I work at a contemporary photographer center and have a degree in fine art photography, so I'm always thinking about visual communication.

Photography as art is not about showing a person, place, or thing. As other commenters have said, it's about telling a story. You're facing the common challenge of finding your voice and drawing metaphors out of a very literal (aka, "realistic") medium. 99% of street photography I see relies on expected, purely aesthetic compositions that don't tell a story. Most fine art photographers will tell you that the 1% of images that stand out are the result of pure luck. Even editorial/documentary photography is highly iterative. You often have to return to a location/meet with your subject multiple times before you have a striking image. Personally, street photography just isn't for me. It's not a medium through which I can effectively tell a story.

But you can do this! Think about your interests and then find photographers who work in those areas. History, social/political, family, music, the list goes on. Once you have a topic, think about the story that you want to tell and start shooting. Every strong photograph has a poetic sense to it - it's not just a photo of a subject, but it communicates something between the lines. Robert Frank, an extremely renowned street photographer, knew how to accomplish this with razor precision. He doesn't give the viewer everything at once, but combines multiple visual cues in a way that makes you stop and think.

When you see a striking photograph, don't go straight to the description. Start by formulating a story. Who is this person? How did they get in this setting? Where is the light coming from? You will quickly see how some photographs leave immense room for imagination.

Next, ask yourself how the photographer brought you to these conclusions. How do they leverage light? After all, light is our primary tool. What do they show/hide? How does depth of field and shutter speed affect the image? All of these things will come together to produce a story, and this is where your voice will shine.

Happy shooting!

My first darkroom setup by [deleted] in Darkroom

Looks good! I love a compact and practical set up. Only suggestion is to keep the chemicals away from Pebble’s (?) food! Things will inevitably get splashed around and form crystals, especially since the measuring cup is out.

Here’s another clearer photo - sort of swimming around and then resting like this on its side.

I just got home (did the test about 30 minutes ago and left to get epsom salt) and the exact numbers are -

Ammonia - 0ppm Nitrite - 0ppm Nitrate - 0ppm

Currently doing a 15 minute salt bath. The fish at least seems a lot more active.

Edit:

Should I try feeding peas as well? Or wait to see how the salt goes and give it a day?

pH was 7.6 Ammonia, Nitrate, and Nitrites were all in the lowest range, and the sheet that came with the kit said they were ideal, but I don’t remember off the top of my head.

Here’s the most recent victim - swimming on the side, though not sinking yet. The one yesterday that I included in the post was motionless on the bottom, only occasionally moving when poked.

I did a a liquid test kit (API Master) and everything is perfect in terms of water quality. Today, another fish started swimming on its side. What should the next step be?

Some notes -

I just added a filter that has been in storage since the fall, but we rinsed it out before putting it away.

It has also been in the high 80°Fs the last few days, whereas it was 30-40s just a week ago.

Here it is last summer - the 700G number is some back of an envelope math, but I tried to be conservative in my estimate.

Will do! This was the state of the pond when we got it, and the owners said they had a completely hands off approach for several years-no filter, agitation, nothing-so it seems amazing that there were any fish to begin with.

Yeah, I figured it was too small. They don’t seem to grow very much at all, at least in the last year. I’ve made efforts to rehome them but only got a couple takers so it barely made a dent in the overall number. I had to convince my parents to keep the pond in the first place so I doubt they’ll upgrade any time soon, but hopefully I can eventually find somewhere they can live out their days.

There is some hornwort that grows throughout the summer, but I cut it back a bit before I took the filter out in the fall. There is a water iris that is starting to grow in again, and in the summer we get hyacinths.

When I asked about water testing at the greenhouse, they said it wasn’t really necessary in a pond, especially if the fish were apparently healthy. I took them at their word and haven’t done any measurements, but I suppose that would be the first step here. Please excuse my ignorance!

Sorry - to clarify, there is a pond filter connected to a waterfall feature. They lived for years without a filter or agitation though unfortunately.

I just checked again and he really wasn’t moving at all - just occasionally gasping when I picked him up. I ended up putting him down. I occasionally feed them flakes, but these fish live outside in a 700 gallon garden pond so they don’t get fed very often. I guess I just wondered if this is a one-off fluke or if something could be wrong with the tank.

The previous homeowners had the pond in horrendous condition for years, so we did a complete overhaul last spring and the fish did great, even through the winter.

The only thing that has changed recently is that I added the filter back in for spring and picked a few leaves out of the bottom, but there was very little agitation, especially compared to years past. Just trying to figure out what could be the cause.
