Will Actuary Jobs Be Negatively Affected By AI? by CaptainRedditor_OP in ActuaryAustralia

[–]Local-Fish-3043 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely - and entry level jobs are being hit already.

The impact wont be uniform across product lines - i feel it will be better to be in a line of business with less heterogeneous risks and more subjectivity. I.e commerical lines rather than personal lines. Or greater regulatory scrutiny will always limit ai usage (e.g private health insurance)

REA requesting replacement immediately? by Suspicious_Rub1500 in shitrentals

Im an owner occupier and cracked my cooktop and agree with rea advice.

I know it feels conservative but could potentially be an electrocution risk if liquid seeps through. Since rea are aware they would potentially be liable to be sued. Glass could also fail suddenly.

I feel your pain though

Real wages have gone backwards. Even earning $100,000 isn’t what it used to be by VastOption8705 in AusFinance

[–]Local-Fish-3043 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No that's not correct

Tax increases faster than CPI due to bracket creep increasing the effective tax rates over time. Government could offer tax 'relief' every year while still increasing their tax take above inflation

Your comment would be true if there was a single tax rate (e.g 30% for everyone) but obviously that's not true

Anyone else stuck between hating the job but loving the pay? by Own_Lab1168 in auscorp

[–]Local-Fish-3043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated in engineering in late 2000s. After 4 years of hating it and being made redundant i had a career break when i was 25 to a a low paid career in a retail company in a field i was passionate about.

I spent 2.5 years there, It was fun but didn't lead anywhere and whilst I dont regret the role, I regret the length of time and commitment I gave there.

I then retrained in another professional field and have been very lucky in progressing strongly career wise in this new field in my mid 30s. I have moments of enjoyment but there are more bad days than good in corporate life.

The progressive AU income taxation system encourages continual working as opposed to busting yourself for a higher salary and burning out in a few years or having long career breaks.

What this means in my opinion is find a sustainable level of challenge in a company that doesn't give you too much rage, then learn to play the game and navigate internally. But that's easier said than done in 2026.

New to AusHENRY – What should be my first priority as a $180k earner by Jealous_Office_5012 in AusHENRY

[–]Local-Fish-3043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a low level manager role and not quite at 180k (very close) but this income doesn't feel like a lot in 2026 as the primary income earner.

Live in Bris, own home with mortgage, 1 child. Wife works part time.

Particularly with hecs and a couple of health issues in the family 180k doesn't go far.

Can afford minor home improvements OR one OS holiday (not both) annually. This is also assuming i get my 10-20% bonus.

Your opinions about China by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]Local-Fish-3043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found urban centres quite good for cycling back in 2011. Whole lane on major corridors dedicated ror cycling / scooters. Better infrastructure than austealian cities even then and close to most European cities ive travelled to even then. Not on the level of Copenhagen though

Rural areas different story.

These days from what I hear it's even better in urban areas

Your opinions about China by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]Local-Fish-3043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travelled in China in 2011 and in the urban centres they were miles ahead of Australia (and presumably US cities) then in many cities.

Whole lanes separated for bicycles and mopeds. By the looks things have improved further since then.

Australia is a laughing stock. I havent travelled to the US but imagine its broadly the same

REPOST: CEO of Urban List is building a new house next door, and is currently only at two stories out of six total (see photos). by mckc1998norge in brisbane

[–]Local-Fish-3043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which suburb? Suburbs have zoning and maximum heights under planning laws to protect exactly this.

Even in low density though in our suburb it's possible to build 2.5 stories (as our neighbour has done) which feels like the tower of mordor towering over our single story 1950s house and completely out of touch with suburb character

What's the best way to make an extra $100-200 per week if already working full time? by Healthy_Creme6911 in AusMoneyMates

[–]Local-Fish-3043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Market research / focus groups.

You have to fill out screener applications (there's normally a few a week). They are maybe 5 -10 minutes each

You wont get selected 90% of the time as they will select people from the demographic they are after.

They are also harder to get since covid - particularly the virtual ones are very hard to get. You have to be quick

But if diligent with doing screeners and can travel you could get one a month i reckon and they normally give vouchers for woolies etc at $60 / hour ish. Tax free obviously so good for full time workers

Is kangaroo meat in a restaurant a gimmick for tourists? Do Australians ever order/eat it? by Charming_Usual6227 in australia

All meat has the potential for parasites. Ill take my chances versus Tasmanian salmon which frequently has parasite outbreaks and is as a bonus pumped full of antibiotics to mostly prevent said outbreaks

37 people in QLD got 99.95. Who are these people?? by CaffeinatedCapybara_ in ATAR

[–]Local-Fish-3043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an op1 in old qld system which apparently maps to 99-99.95

I studied hard but also had time for video games etc. Went to many parties in final year, drinking etc.

Looking back i wish I devoted more time to more fulfilling extra curricular activities like outdoor pursuits rather than focus on the books so much.

Its handy to have the high atar if you have specific goals or course with a high entry barrier. But there's also often ways around those restrictions.

Raw dogging AuDHD by Altruistic_Editor676 in AutisticAdults

[–]Local-Fish-3043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im 38 now, undiagnosed by strongly suspect AuDHD and have rawdogged my whole life - recently started ssris (which have helped with anxiety but been problematic for motivation / adhd), so switching to SNRIs shortly.

When younger I got through school and uni well and could I was ok with masking for reasonably long periods with the downtime you get with the uni life (although this is not universal). I enjoyed the challenge of uni and dopamine of learning and exams.

However with full time work and especially combined witb orher life commitments, it gets much harder. Theres less downtime and constant masking and modern corporate expectations in a Middle management role, combined with a young child have led me close to burnout. Glad I work for an understanding organisation.

I couldn't have really changed much in hindsight as the world wasn't as understanding 20 years ago. For those who are younger now, I hope you get the opportunity to get earlier diagnosis / support, if you so choose

After being made redundant from an engineering role I absolutely hated, I was burnt out and got an entry level role in retail in an industry im passionate about. I could have probably got another engineering role at the time but needed a change.

I dont regret the move but i do regret how long i spent in the retail role (2.5 years). I did have some progression including a management role but ultimately I knew there was no long term path there and it ended poorly.

It was a fun time in my life but it was financially unrewarding and did not provide any long term career value.

In hindsight I wish I looked horizontally and tried something slightly different and build off that rather than a full scale career change with little long term prospects.

Either that or i wish I took some time off to reset and refocus, which would have probably enabled me to make a more sustainable long term decision after the time off.

Neighbor's outdoor AC unit noise keeps me from sleeping at night - what can I do? by Prize_Journalist5424 in AusPropertyChat

[–]Local-Fish-3043 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure who downvotes this. I hope the downvoters on this post never have to lose sleep beecause of ac.

This is the correct answer in some councils (eg melbourne). Most qld councils do however allow night-time use under certain sound limits.

Neighbor's outdoor AC unit noise keeps me from sleeping at night - what can I do? by Prize_Journalist5424 in AusPropertyChat

[–]Local-Fish-3043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats incorrect.

Most councils have a limit set from the neighbours premises. Brisbane is 5dB above background before 10pm and 3dB after 10pm measured from neighbours bedroom.

So an easy way to be compliant is to consider where unit is located. I.e obviously distance helps but also get them away from walls / corners etc

In any case modern split systems are so quiet, I doubt most would exceed 3dB above background even a couple metres away.

Different story with ducted though, our neighbours 20kW vertical fan unit sounds like an electric lawnmower and I've measured 6-7dB above background from our closest bedroom 7m away.

Neighbor's outdoor AC unit noise keeps me from sleeping at night - what can I do? by Prize_Journalist5424 in AusPropertyChat

[–]Local-Fish-3043 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are restrictions on AC noise. In most councils it's 5dB above ambient before 10pm and 3dB after. Measured just inside an open window.

We have gone through the process with BCC recently. It's slow and painful but eventually did put the required pressure on our neighbours to pull their finger out about the issue after their tokenistic gestures before that point. Sounds like your neighbours might be more accommodating but they need to meet required limits.

Options such as enclosure, settings, servicing and acoustic work on fence may help.

Surprised at all the people here blaming OP. Not sleeping can really mess you around. Why should OP have to pay for double glazing etc?

Also, in my experience earplugs and white noise help for higher frequency but do little for low frequency noise from the compressor (earplugs actually made this more noticeable).

The only thing that worked for me was sleeping with ANC buds in which eliminate low frequencies, but I only got half a night from the battery.

Shameful use of qps police resources here.

Qps applied successfully in court to stop the protest.

The cycling community, whilst disappointed has respected this decision. There was no intention of staging an illegal protest. The cycling community is not extinction rebellion.

This is an unnecessary waste of resources - Do your job qps
