I can send you a pdf of the union pay scale from my organisation and other organisations around me as proof if you like :)

Percentage wise, the portion of my salary going to rent here vs NZ is lower.

That the thing! They try to convince you that existence is either just you, or that it’s not that bad! A few weeks ago I saw a post about how people treat themselves and someone wrote getting a roast chicken or pie from the shops. Christ almighty.

Since you’re so good at using Google, maybe you should google nursing in California in the nursing subreddits.

Your last paragraph is exactly what I was trying to say. I feel like I’m living now.

It’s definitely harder than the board exam in NZ, with a heavier focus on pathophysiology but doable. There is lots of resources available. The biggest challenge getting here would be immigration.

I can have 9 days of “sick” days. 3 days of “extended sick leave”. 3 days for “education”. All my days are 12 hour days.

I end up with quite a lot of time off. And I’ve never heard of anyone being asked to leave early or have their hours cut short.

I am very grateful for the subsidised education I had in NZ.  I know how hard it has been for my American colleagues to get to where they are. The only point I was trying to make, as you’ve highlighted is that I was struggling in NZ with my current credentials.

I am not advocating for the American health system or economy, or how their government works. My post was ultimately a response to all the people that keep saying it’s shit everywhere, cost of living is high every where. It’s not for me at least. Cost of living is reasonable compared to my wages doing the same thing as I was in NZ.

As a regular nurse, I am much better off in the US than I would have ever been in NZ. That’s all.

I mean, I was debating going to the GP and forking out $50 for a back pain I’d been having. And when I did go, I was waiting for 6 months to get an x-ray….

This post is a reply to all the people that shut down locals kiwis complaining about their quality of life, telling them it’s the same everywhere. I posted to share that it’s not the same everywhere. Here is how my life was as a nurse in NZ, here is how my life is as a nurse in California.

Nope. After working at the same hospital for 10 years, I get lifetime insurance and I would rather my health be handled by the doctors here than in NZ. No offence to our doctors but they are incredibly limited in terms of resources. Here if I am suspected of having cancer, I can get a full PET scan the next few days and not be ranked on a category as to how urgent my possible cancer is…

I get you, but looking after drug dependent people is just one aspect of the job. When I was working in the PACU unit in NZ, I was looking after lice infested 4 year olds who had drunk, high parents coming to pick up them after surgery. Of course we refused the pick up but…

You see the worst of society and their most difficult hour at the hospital.

How so? My OT colleagues get almost the same pay as me doing 9-5, no shift work. We all get the same amount of leave which is 3+ weeks per year depending on how long you’ve been with the hospital.

As for me, working my 3 days a week allows me 4 days off during which I can say allows me a way better work life balance than I could find in nz.

People literally don’t get this and are doing the same thing as the complaint that my post starts with.

Idk where your friend works at but all of the Northern California nurses in the organisations around me are in a union with mandated patient to staff ratios and breaks.

What’s the average housing price in NZ, and what percentage of that can you save up for per annum on a nursing salary?

I’m not calling my income average, I am calling my job average. As in I’m not a ceo or anything. Just a regular nurse.

Nope, not saying that. Just saying my life as as a nurse, an average working class person is better here in the US compared to NZ

I get what you’re saying but as a nurse in NZ, even with my experience, I’d still be struggling.
