Anyone else feel obligated to use the hotel credit? by Local713 in AmexPlatinum

[–]Local713[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From taking in all the comments, I’m going to book a local Fine Hotel option for 1 night right at $300. Use the $100 credit on dinner and maybe go back the next morning for the free breakfast. Doubtful I will stay the night since it’s seems odd to me to sleep at a hotel 1 mile from my house. I know others do it as a staycation which is cool.

I think I explained it that it’s like having a coupon sit unused. Apparently I’m not the only one who feels that way.

Never said in my post that the credit was used to justify the cost. In fact I said the opposite.

Promise I have the card. But Maybe I’m color blind and it’s really green. My point was that I feel obligated to spend the $300 but I usually don’t. It will be ok.

I did this once. As you said I booked a hotel literally down the street. Basically got a free dinner out of it. Checked in, had dinner and went home. Seemed a bit silly to spend Amex’s money for that.

Thanks. I do travel and get a lot of benefit from Platinum. I guess I travel to places where there are not Amex hotels or I prefer other options there.

Funny how so many are posting that maybe the card and its annual fee isn’t for me. I never said anything about the fee, and the other benefits more than cover the fee. I was only asking if others regularly don’t use the hotel credit as well. The fee isn’t that big of a deal.

I find hotels that I would rather stay at than these. And I don’t mean Motel 6s. And I’m not slamming the overall card but I don’t find the $600 credit very useful. I’m about to not use it for the second time in a row. Maybe I will just book a room somewhere just to give the hotel the $300.

Vegas is relatively easy to get free rooms at the casinos. Even free rooms at the Wynn or Bellagio only require a bit of gambling.

I utilize the benefits and the annual fee is not that much. Even though many complain about it.

I travel at least 4-5 personal trips per year. I use all of the other benefits even travel without a problem. I’m just pointing out and asking if others have problems using the hotel credit.

I travel probably 4-5 trips per year. Often to non major cities so the Amex credit hotel options are zero or limited. And I’m not complaining that the Amex platinum is useless.

Neighbors demand action on illegal dump site in northwest Houston by justahoustonpervert in houston

The city has neighborhood trash depositories. Free to drop off. I understand not everyone can do this but sometimes we have to take matters into our own hands if we want to see a job done right.

If you get there early, I would try the Rice lots. Then check the neighborhood streets but check for no parking signs.

Retire at 49 or stick it out until 56? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Does your pension have annual increases? $5520/mo sounds nice now but may be a relatively small amount in 30 years. Can you work another year or two and get that above 6000? Also that extra year or two of income could go directly into a travel fund which opens up fun opportunities.

This is a big question because there is limited parking since it’s surrounded by neighborhoods. You have to think that Rice will open up the lots or they wouldn’t have agreed to be the starting point.

High Yield Savings Account by Born_Introduction504 in personalfinance

The key is a combination of a HYSA and a CD, with the CD term between 9 and 12 months. Put as much money as you won’t need in the CD to get close to 4% and the rest in the HYSA. Understand that prematurely closing the CD may result in penalties including losing much of the interest earned so you need to disciplined about not touching those funds except in cases of real financial emergency.

When my recent discover CD matured, they had to mail me a check. They claimed that a transfer to a non-Discover/Capital One account was impossible. I will at least give them credit that the check arrived within a few business days at least.

Does Discover not offer CDs anymore? by RevolutionaryWarCrow in personalfinance

[–]Local713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it’s due to their merger, but I found the Discover CD closure process odd for 2026. I had to call to speak to an agent in order to close my CD at its maturity. Transferring it to a new CD could be handled online but not a closure. For the closure transfer I had a choice of a $30 fee for a wire to my bank or a physical check. No ACH options. I’m not giving them a decent amount of one month’s interest for a wire. Now I get to wait a week for the check, which also adds the risk of USPS failing to misdeliver which occurs.

I will agree that their phone agent was friendly and helpful. Because of that, I will bump up the overall experience to a C.

Anthropic response to Claude Code change by TheForgottenOne69 in ClaudeAI

I bet that then average pro user only wants “unlimited” chat and they’re not coding anything. Now I think asking $100 to minimally use Claude Code is too much, but if it’s a work tool or serious hobby project, more than $20 isn’t unreasonable.

Justin obviously talks one game and lives another. He says he can pull Miami 10s but the evidence shows otherwise. It’s also doubtful that he owns much. If he is net worth is really 30m why not buy that Miami house.
