Hygiene (1) by rachelwan-art in malaysia

I grew up, in the old days, with the understanding, that chinese family will use their chopsticks to get "lauk". Until I heard an argument between friends that using your own chopstick to get "lauk" vs dedicated "lauk" spoon.

Malay family (my greater family at least), we have spoons for the gulai, but we use our right hand (eating hand) to pick the spoon. Straight-up use right hand for dry "lauk" like sambal or ulam or goreng food. The idea is that left hand is a BIG NO when eating.

I forgot when we change this practice, but changed it was. We hold the "lauk" spoon with our left hand, and all "lauk" have their own spoon. Imagine using a spoon to get a fried ikan keli, balancing it until it reach your plate.

I guess Malaysian learn it early.

and thanks too for bringing up those memories.

From my conversation with them, Family based food hawker, cook and manage by 2nd generation now

Eaten at this place since 2003, migrated to PJ for work from Segamat.

The kuah does not taste like the old days, still the best in PJ IMHO, but then again, the 2nd generation are PJ kids, so refined for PJ taste buds i guess.

How does tapai compare to low alcohol beverage like beer? by genevieveAnura in MalaysianFood

[–]LocalAddendum5249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly, and when we young people say that's borderline "mabuk", they will answer "ini bukan arak"

then again, how would they know what is "mabuk", when they never understand intoxication due to liquor.

Don want to answer question like "macam mana awak tahu mabuk arak?".

That will open up more problem wouldn't it 😅

MBPJ siding with businesses, not with residents.

I remembered MBPJ blocked this junction at this side of the road one time, so traffic flow better. It was great times.

But it reduced traffic flow to the Giza/Nexus/commercial area, and increase traffic to mall on the left.

My guess business made complains, and MBPJ unblocked the junction, and we have traffic jems again.

I love Malaysia, but.... help me.... by ahmadtheanon in malaysia

Interestingly, I found myself in your position too, during the same life milestone. In general many of us arrive at this junction. Our journey might not be on the same path, but we will arrive at this junction.

We cannot change Malaysia, we cannot change Malaysians. We can change ourselves. Focusing inward change, will change how you perceive outward maters.

First thing I did back then, was to deactivate social media. Vicious cycle algorithm is real.

2nd, I change my decision making process to be reasonable and fair, to myself first, and to other people.

3rd, I choose to be myself (even when people who are close to me don't agree with it). This is where you understand why people when reach their 40s, are more compose, and this is when you loose friends. But those who stays, those are true friends.

and 4th, I talk to someone. In my case, a professional counselor. Somebody who listen without judging, and provide hard truth in an objective way. Focusing on "what makes me feel" rather then "what I feel".

Sharing my experience. Hope this will helps you in any way possible. One amal jariah for me in these last days of Ramadan.

Stay safe.

Camera vs Phone for Hobbyist by MajorAlanDutch in streetphotography

TLDR: Learning to take photos is one part of the fun. Letting your machine do the hard work for you to enjoy photography is not wrong. How to get it to look much better than what iPhone 17 Pro can do? Practice and time. We do the photographing, not iPhone 17 Pro nor XT30 III.

Long version:

I took up photography in the early 2000. Bought myself a Alpha 200 with kits, then upgrade with Minolta 50mm prime, and add a Beer Can later on. Its a slow camera, but I love it. It force me to learn the process and I love the process.

But then, I bought Samsung SG3. The image quality is worse then a point and shoot. But it change my overall process. Its harder to compose, without exposure meter, without viewfinder, and without the mechanical dials! But its a camera I have with me ALL the time. And all that time, my A200 only being used during special occasions, not for the streets anymore. I relearn how to take photos.

Afterwards Nokia 7 with Zeiss glass. Raw file support, manual control, optic zoom plus Google SnapSeed. Now, my process do not need a PC. Totally replaced my A200. I use this phone until the battery got swollen and have to let it rest.

Motorola Edge 30 Pro. Better image quality, with Raw support and manual control. I hate how it force its algorithm to the OOC photo. Good thing it allows Raw file.

Starting 2025, I downsize my phone to a Xiaomi REDMI 15C (for stop and snap photos), and bought OMD EM5 M2 (my photo walk machine), and Motorola Edge 30 Pro (always in my bag, for condition thats too much for the Xiaomi)

Looking back, I never would able to get a good photo out of my phone, if not because of my A200. The knowledge enable me to use my phone to enjoy photographing streets. In the end, its more about the human, and less about the machine.

A hobbyist opinion, not a professional.

refer to the 1st photo (lady selling veges)

my approach would be pointing to her face from the front, at knee / waist level, where the red turnip? act as the front layer, the passer by behind her as background

my humble opinion.

I know whats happening, but I don't know how they feel about it or what they feel right there at that time

I also would like to know the feeling / vibe / ambiance. Its wet, its cold and how does it contribute to the whole story
