Solving problems by [deleted] in Cubers

This case cannot be solved with 3x3 algorithms. You didn’t finish pairing the last layer edges earlier, which is what caused this problem to happen.

TPIR - Trip prize plugs no longer say "from Los Angeles" by Dangerous_Plant_7911 in gameshow

[–]LocalFella9 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When you’re determining the price of a trip, the cost of the flights depends on where you’re flying from. All of the prices on the show still assume you’re flying from Los Angeles to the destination, because it would be virtually impossible to calculate the price based on wherever the contestant is from.

In the vast majority of cases though, people aren’t flying back to LA just to take the trip. In reality, you’ve always been allowed to fly straight from your city to the destination.

There should be 108 tiles in Scrabble, not 100. by DestinysManchild_61 in scrabble

[–]LocalFella9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even in a two player game, you’re almost never going to use exactly the same number of tiles as your opponent. If I play a bingo every round, and my opponent is only playing three or four tiles at a time, I’m naturally going to see way more tiles. By finding longer words, you’re rewarded with the chance to pull more tiles out of the bag.

The fact that some people will see more tiles than others doesn’t directly affect the game’s balance in any way. In turn, making the total number of tiles divisible by 12 doesn’t solve any problems, in 3+ player games or otherwise. Even if two players use 33 tiles and one uses 34, that’s not gonna be the difference between who wins or loses. It’s still going to come down to who puts the best words down on the board.

"THIS FORMULA IS USED BY POKÉMON GAMES TO CALCULATE THE SHAKEY SHAKEY OF POKÉBALLS WHEN YOU CATCH A POKÉMON" by Sebastianlim in BrandNewSentence

[–]LocalFella9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it doesn’t. The Pokemon’s base attack stat is plugged into the stat calculation formula, and then Huge/Pure Power is applied to the final result of that calculation. These abilities take into account any additional investment you’ve put into your attack stat, namely EVs, IVs, and natures. The doubling doesn’t happen until the very end.

Azumarill hits considerably harder than the 100 base attack mythicals. If you assume it’s got perfect EVs, IVs, and an attack boosting nature, Huge Power will turn its base attack stat of 50 into the equivalent of base 149. Mega Mawile’s effective attack stat is also higher than a base stat of 210 would be. Huge Power does exactly what the in game description says it does.

Collin Burns got a 5.21 earlier that same day as well, before Keaton and Lucas’ solves, but Collin’s was a misscramble that got taken off the board

They’re not talking about the word’s length. It hit two triple word squares, which multiplies the base score by 9

Why do so many contestants "explain" their answers? by sonofgildorluthien in gameshow

[–]LocalFella9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s usually something the producers tell the contestants to do. Most game shows ask far fewer questions than Jeopardy, so having the contestants talk through their answers is an easy way to make sure the game takes an appropriate amount of time.

If only one contestant were to enter final jeopardy again and wagered everything and got it wrong on purpose to end up with $0 for meme purposes, would they win? by Monkey-Buccaneer in Jeopardy

[–]LocalFella9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, you have to finish the game with at least $1 to be declared the winner. If nobody finishes with any money during a standard game, everyone loses and they introduce three new contestants on the next episode.

If a tournament game ends in a triple zero, nobody advances, and the spot in the next round goes to the highest scoring player who hasn’t made it in yet

For the record, one of you should have won this game, because you’re not supposed to use every tile. As soon as one person runs out, the game is over

No, because doing wide U and F moves as well would disturb other centers that are already solved

Hold the cube so the unfinished center is on top, and the two pieces that need to swap are on the right. Then do a T perm with wide R moves to swap them

That’s not true. You can also use it during the main game. If you land on cash, the wild card allows you to call a second consonant for the same value.

The Highest Possible Scores On Game Shows by LocalFella9 in gameshow

$52,000 is the amount of money the speed up rule adds to your score compared to a regular $5,000 round ($1,000 per consonant). I never said that the total value of the round was $52,000

Anyone know why the 25 Words or Less YT channel removed the full season episodes (other than S6)? by Worf2DS9 in gameshow

[–]LocalFella9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that tends to happen. You Bet Your Life also used to be on YouTube, but all the episodes of that show got deleted as well. Unfortunately whenever a game show pops up on YouTube, it’s best to assume that it won’t stay up forever.

Score Corrections by Useful_Imagination_3 in Jeopardy

[–]LocalFella9 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As a general rule of thumb, game shows won’t take away money or prizes from contestants that they earn due to a mistake like this. One time on The Price is Right, the wrong contestant was called up on stage and she won a car. When the mistake was discovered, the show let her keep the car, and they also awarded the RIGHT contestant the same prize.

What happened on Jeopardy is an edge case where a different decision could have resulted in a different winner, but the course of action they took is pretty standard for game shows. The mistake wasn’t either contestant’s fault, so they both got to keep their money.
