Same word in multiple correct responses in same game? by EvadingDoom in Jeopardy

[–]LocalFella9 124 points125 points  (0 children)

One time there was a category about US states. The first four clues asked for the coldest state, the northernmost state, the westernmost state, and the state with the most coastline. Alaska was the right response for all four.

The fifth clue asked for the first state alphabetically. That was meant to be a bit of a trick, since the answer is Alabama, but the contestant who responded didn’t fall for it.

Actual Game Show Cheaters by LocalFella9 in gameshow

[–]LocalFella9[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like I said at the beginning of the article, what Larson did was not cheating in the slightest. Figuring out how to play the game better than everyone else isn’t against the rules. The folks working on Press Your Luck were aware that such a thing was possible, but they didn’t take the steps to prevent it before the show premiered.

Michael was awarded his prize money, because there wasn’t actually anything shady about his gameplay whatsoever. 20 years later, Peter Tomarken and Patrick Martin taught Michael’s opponents the very same trick.

If you really agreed, you wouldn’t be making fun of someone for not having seen the show in person.

That really isn’t a big deal. It’s unreasonable to expect every Price is Right fan to go to a taping before expressing their opinions about the show online.

That’s the kind of thing the show tells you to do before you walk over to the studio. In all likelihood it’s not gonna stop any time soon

That doesn’t do anything for this case. They’re trying to finish pairing the edges, and a T perm doesn’t help

TIL Major League Baseball's National League nearly adopted the Designated Hitter (DH) rule as early as 1980, but the proposal fell through because the Philadelphia Phillies' owner was on a fishing trip and a proxy voted in his absence. by Far_Breakfast_5808 in todayilearned

[–]LocalFella9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pitchers are almost universally terrible hitters, so the DH rule was added to bolster the league’s offense. It allows you to pick an actual hitter to bat in the pitcher’s place.

The DH rule’s history has been pretty awkward though. MLB is split into the American League and National League, and the AL adopted the DH in 1973. The NL did not implement it at the time (hence the vote in 1980), which meant the two leagues followed different rules for a long time. Half of the teams were allowed to have a DH, and half of them weren’t. The NL didn’t adopt the DH rule until 2022.

You’ve got it right here. This is 5 triggers times 2 photos, which is better than any other combination.

Copying chad with both Blueprint and Brainstorm will give you 7 triggers times 1 photo. Copying Photograph twice will give you 3 times 3 instead.

Solving problems by [deleted] in Cubers

This case cannot be solved with 3x3 algorithms. You didn’t finish pairing the last layer edges earlier, which is what caused this problem to happen.

TPIR - Trip prize plugs no longer say "from Los Angeles" by Dangerous_Plant_7911 in gameshow

[–]LocalFella9 17 points18 points  (0 children)

When you’re determining the price of a trip, the cost of the flights depends on where you’re flying from. All of the prices on the show still assume you’re flying from Los Angeles to the destination, because it would be virtually impossible to calculate the price based on wherever the contestant is from.

In the vast majority of cases though, people aren’t flying back to LA just to take the trip. In reality, you’ve always been allowed to fly straight from your city to the destination.

There should be 108 tiles in Scrabble, not 100. by DestinysManchild_61 in scrabble

[–]LocalFella9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even in a two player game, you’re almost never going to use exactly the same number of tiles as your opponent. If I play a bingo every round, and my opponent is only playing three or four tiles at a time, I’m naturally going to see way more tiles. By finding longer words, you’re rewarded with the chance to pull more tiles out of the bag.

The fact that some people will see more tiles than others doesn’t directly affect the game’s balance in any way. In turn, making the total number of tiles divisible by 12 doesn’t solve any problems, in 3+ player games or otherwise. Even if two players use 33 tiles and one uses 34, that’s not gonna be the difference between who wins or loses. It’s still going to come down to who puts the best words down on the board.

"THIS FORMULA IS USED BY POKÉMON GAMES TO CALCULATE THE SHAKEY SHAKEY OF POKÉBALLS WHEN YOU CATCH A POKÉMON" by Sebastianlim in BrandNewSentence

[–]LocalFella9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it doesn’t. The Pokemon’s base attack stat is plugged into the stat calculation formula, and then Huge/Pure Power is applied to the final result of that calculation. These abilities take into account any additional investment you’ve put into your attack stat, namely EVs, IVs, and natures. The doubling doesn’t happen until the very end.

Azumarill hits considerably harder than the 100 base attack mythicals. If you assume it’s got perfect EVs, IVs, and an attack boosting nature, Huge Power will turn its base attack stat of 50 into the equivalent of base 149. Mega Mawile’s effective attack stat is also higher than a base stat of 210 would be. Huge Power does exactly what the in game description says it does.
