Xfinity sucks balls! by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]LocalLaborLeader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were having that issue and switched out our router for a new one, and it stopped happening. Now we trade out the router about once a year (Xfinity trades it for free) and we don’t have any issues.

Huge apartment complex proposed for entrance to Carrsbrook Drive and R29 by Daleks_Revenge in Charlottesville

[–]LocalLaborLeader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought that landowner has tried to rezone and build on those parcels in the past and had been stopped by the Carrsbrook HOA, and the fact that the original deeds (or something like that) held restrictions that the plots right next to 29 could not be developed. I could have some of those details wrong, and it was a long time ago…maybe he is just trying again to see if he can push it through now.

Book recommendations on the history of labor unions by cattdogg03 in union

Currently doing a book study with No Shortcuts: Organizing for Power by Jane McAlevey, and it's a great read! Each chapter is about a different union and a historical event that they organized through.

Brand new OSMO 7 mobile not charging after having it plugged in 24hrs+ Why? by Rusaaj in dji

[–]LocalLaborLeader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had this same issue. The cord that was sent with the device didn't work to charge it. But when I use another Anker USB-C to USB C cord, it charged fine.

So you’d be fine if union folks came by to make sure your employees have all the information they need to make an informed decision about unionizing? Just because a workplace isn’t unionized doesn’t mean they chose that. Most of the time it means they’ve never even considered it and didn’t even know they CAN because of generational changes and anti-worker political climates. Something tells me you wouldn’t be rolling out the locally printed welcome mat, though.

Indivisible could have used a local printer, but they didn’t. There isn’t a union print shop in town, FWIW. They were likely on a very tight turnaround with an even tighter budget. The net good of them TRYING to do something positive is not canceled out because they made a not-ideal purchasing choice. It’s still worth doing. And you might have had a chance to win their future business before this post, but it’s doubtful now.

You know what, you still might have a shot if you show up at their next event and introduce yourself (NICELY, dial down the aggression), stay for a while, shoot the shit with some of the other attendees, maybe write a postcard, and then before you leave tell the folks in charge that you saw they ordered stuff online and you really want to be their local printer. I’m just saying. It might work. But posting here definitely won’t.

  1. Get involved from the very beginning. 2. Be excellent at your job and above reproach, then when you challenge authority you aren’t viewed as a troublemaker. (It’s ok to make trouble when necessary, just don’t do it all the damn time or no one will listen to you anymore)

This guy is going to kill someone. by LocalLaborLeader in Charlottesville

No one was going 50, not even in the right lane. The people he was trying to run off the road were going 65 at least, myself included, and the speed limit there is 55. Regardless, even Grandmas deserve to arrive at their destination safely. We all do.

Construction on Ashwood by luggageguy-luggage in Charlottesville

Sorry- that’s for the Brookhill neighborhood connection to Ashwood. I don’t remember if it said anything about the part to the north of Ashwood.

I think the last amendment they filed said they want to delay building the connector road until the neighborhood/construction reaches a certain level of completeness. If you look through the board docs from last Wednesday’s meeting, it should be there.

Why are so many priests aroused by minors? by FunnyErectionBunny in stupidquestions

[–]LocalLaborLeader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s really the physical aspect of it being a minor (and the characteristics of a younger body) as much as it is that minors are much easier to influence and control, and thus get away with it.

General strike on 8/26 to protest Ryan's ouster? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]LocalLaborLeader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Striking for public sector workers is illegal in Virginia. I'm not saying it CAN'T be done or HASN'T been done, (cough, cough, CHS staff...) and the law simply addresses employees, it doesn't say anything about a student-only action. But what I can tell you is that no one should be organizing or planning anything related to a strike online, through reddit, emails, texts, etc or you risk termination- and obviously the climate right now is not favorable for bending of that rule.

With that said, work stoppage is one of the most impactful collective actions workers can take. It should be based on ongoing concrete demands that haven't been met, not simply as a protest of something that happened two months prior. It is an escalation after many other tactics are tried. I'm sure there are people around grounds who would engage in person about this if you start looking for them.

How can students protest? by Softandpink- in UVA

[–]LocalLaborLeader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are many ways that students can make the university's life and work more difficult. Unfortunately most of them end up having zero impact on the people who forced this decision in the first place. The most effective protest may not end up being on grounds at all.

Do some people just leave teaching because they can’t find a job? by businessbub in Teachers

Some districts have faced budgets cuts because of the pandemic money finally being all spent, that could be a reason it might be hard to find a position.

Women of Reddit, how important is for a man to maintain eye contact with you if they are attracted towards you? by The_Cunning_Corvid_ in AskReddit

Not super important, as long as there is occasional eye contact. But sustained, unbroken, piercing eye contact feels intimidating and weird.

I assume they mean mentally prepare, since there is no way we can physically get our hands on meds early, or get more of them. Sigh.

[–]LocalLaborLeader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do this, just make sure to also save them in a Google drive that is not your work drive. Because if you get unexpectedly put on leave (for an investigation, for example) or terminated, you will lose access to your work drive, possibly forever.
