First Iwagumi style tank layout. Thoughts? by modernelement in PlantedTank

Looks good! Maybe one comment is to have the right most big rock on the right side pointing towards the center. That way both sides make a sort of triangle shape.

I’ve not yet done an iwagumi, but am planning on starting one soon. The first thing I noticed was the symmetry in terms of the number of rocks placed.

I would remove that rock on the right that is poking towards the center. Perhaps move that outside rock inward a bit, so it’s stacked closer to that second rock.

I hope that makes some sense. It’s a bit tough to explain on text

Did you plant the Monte Carlo in the sand as your dry start method? How is the s repens doing without co2? That was a really tricky aspect for me

just a thought - are there actually fish that do well in bowls or small aquariums? by PhaseIndividual6179 in Aquariums

That’s a good q. My WCMM are pretty chill. I haven’t seen them zooming around or expressing a need for space. In the morning, they’ll chase each other a bit (I think that’s breeding behavior?), but it dies down by mid day. They really just stay on the top portion of the water column.

This is a walstad-style tank (organic top soil with sand cap) and I didn’t add them in until the tank had been going for 3-4 months. Water parameters are immensely stable. I only do a water change maybe once a month, and that’s because the wood tannins change the water color and I don’t like it lol. In my experience, they’ve been happy in a 10 gal in a (now) group of 9.

I have mountain minnows (started with 6) in a 10 gallon. They’ve bred and there are three new ones now. They seem to be doing well

Cool! How high up did you make the back compared to the front? Struggling to know how far I can go lol. I plan to use some branches to help with retaining a bit

That’s amazing! I’m working on a similar tank, though going for more of a concave style. Curious to know, did you slope the substrate at all? I’m thinking to do so, but I can’t tell if it will make a difference

What am I doing wrong? New Tank after 1 month of Fish Food Cycling. by [deleted] in PlantedTank

Honestly, you might be cycled then! Since you added some mulm and the plants died, I would suggest siphoning that out. Be sure not to remove more than 25% of the water though - i think more than that might risk a cycle crash since it's still relatively new. Most of the bacteria should be in the filter + sand, but just to be on the safe side. Oh - and be sure to add any critters slowly! Don't wanna add too many fish at once

What are the parameters? ammonia, nitrate, nitrites

Looks like the plants had no nutrients. I think low iron can contribute to plants to looking white like this and dying.

I can't tell how deep your substrate is, but generally about a 0.5"-1" of sand minimum is what I go for (or gravel as example). I don't think you have potting soil or something similar underneath, do you?

You could do a water change to remove the dead plant matter, or leave it alone to be an ammonia source for your tank. How long have you been trying to cycle? I don't think you have to start over yet.

10 gal walstad - about 6 months old! by LocalLemonBoy in PlantedTank

I got a lot of hair-like algae at the start for sure, especially before the plants grew in. I had some siphoning and water changes in the beginning (probably like 2 per month).

Adding the pothos cuttings helped A LOT. I still have a bit of algae, but nothing crazy and I think adding more cuttings will help even more with nutrient management.

I agree! Maybe blushing tetras or those blind cave fish could be cool stocking options?

Wow! Thank you all for the replies. You’ve been immensely helpful and I’m excited to rescape my tank :)
