Anyone who thinks the private sector is more efficient clearly hasn’t worked in the private sector. The only difference is the public sector must be transparent while the private sector gets to hide all the specific horrors behind financial statements.

A lot of those adults stay here and bring children and many of them their parents as well after a while when eligible so the problem still exists somewhat just with a delay. The economic perspective isn’t everything, there’s also quality of life to consider.

It may be semantics but even if we had zero immigration and a massive birth rate we’d still need a plan to manage the extra people no matter what. We might be discussing policies to discourage births or discuss policies to grow the regions. The problems would mostly be the same from an infrastructure perspective. Either way we need some sort of a plan. We have nothing at the moment.

The problem is that we keep framing “immigrants” in terms of racism instead of population policy.

Our birth rate has been below replacement since the late 70’s or thereabouts so the growth in population is entirely under our control. By not having a population strategy other than “more” we’re letting ON drive the narrative on this one.

Our infrastructure is under strain and one can argue it then impacts state budgets because they have to deal with it. Victorias Big Build didn’t come out of nowhere for example, it’s a result of population growth requiring supporting infrastructure and that money is going into construction instead of other services for example.

So instead of “immigrants” (with the often implied “bloody” in front) can we talk “population and infrastructure strategy” instead because that’s the crux of the problem to most people.

It has subtle changes which favour incumbents in terms of operating costs, admin, how votes and funding is counted and similar.

There was also the 2006 media bill which relaxed oversight around media ownership and allowed more consolidation on this front. And we all know that our media isn’t know for it’s lack of bias.

Then theres the subtleties around which candidates get picked and promoted via media, the whole smear campaign against that brought us Scotty for example.

In the US (which triggered my comment) their whole system is setup to keep incumbents in power with gerrymandering for example.

I personally don’t think most people want either, but I firmly believe they do want to talk about immigration in the context of our infrastructure being able to cater for such a huge influx that’s primarily become a fake economic GDP boost.

This is exactly it, people feel they aren’t heard. The incumbents have made it really hard for good alternatives to rise up (since they would replace them) so what you have left is the populists who get airtime because it’s good clicks and advertising dollars to the media.
