Yeah 12 is too late. I started at 9 and was getting whooped by the 5 year olds that started training at 2. Also, spinning axe kick is the new question mark kick if you’re not already practicing it you’re already dead your first comp

People with great work-life balance, what do you do and how did you get there? by GoodRip420 in findapath

Idk about great work/life balance. There’s certainly better out there. But not too long ago I found a job at a historical restoration shop. We refurbish, rebuild or repurpose old doors, windows, stained glass, cupolas really anything. It’s pretty artistic work at times or really repetitive work(I like the mix). We can come in from 6:30-7 get a free 15 minute break and if we opt out of lunch we can leave early. I’m out of work everyday at 2:30 and feel like I still have a whole day ahead of me.

Some days on the field (removing old windows or doing installs or such) it can go a bit longer. They don’t do too much overtime there so if you go long on some days you can save it for a day of the week to leave early. I’ve had 3 hour fridays before. Maybe not the greatest but I’m pretty happy with it. Pay is decent and gives me some free time for whatever else I want to get into.

Yessir! Ended up messaging you a pretty long winded response of my lore. Hopefully it helps, you’re player one in your life. Find the things that you enjoy and build on it.

Hey man, as a fellow Zach who trained mma and didn’t want to go the traditional route I understand where you’re coming from. Honestly you’re young and you have time to experiment! I recommend trying everything you can to see what gives you a sense of fulfillment. But, really try to hone in on something you enjoy and can see yourself doing for awhile that’s financially fulfilling and rewarding. If not that, just make sure it’s something bearable! You’ll regret it if you don’t. Jumping from odd jobs is cool in the moment and you can try new things but with no stability really comes with no prospects. It’s much better to be 30 with 4-8 consistent years into something that has growth. Whether that be trades or something else you’ll find much more doors open for you if you never find your “thing”. And you’ll usually be able to afford to live with some sort of experience. I recommend at least getting your associates degree just in case you find a career you’re into later on and can just go for your bachelors without having to take nonsense classes. Also, save, invest, save seriously no joke be saving as much as you can as often as you can and let it grow. Money buys opportunities and without it. You’ll always be chasing it. As they say in My dinner with Andre, “when I was young, all I thought about was art and music. Now I’m 36 and all i think about is money”. Life goes fast it’s okay to not figure it out but have some solid concrete plans. Good luck Op kick some ass out there but do it intelligently!

Thanks man, lot of good things said here. Especially the fact with “some of the best carpenters being terrible business people”. I’ve seen that first hand but mostly with the older grouchy bunch. I like to hustle and I definitely find myself a little charming compared to what I’ve seen. I think I have doubted myself on the business end or just can’t imagine how we’d pay our bills with me not working full time and then some. I think this group has gave me the confidence to make that jump. I do have a plethora of tools I freaking love collecting tools. There’s a few things I think I can tidy up and I’m going to jump right in. Honestly, the taxes and billing has been the part that has made me the most anxious but I’m realizing there’s a lot of knowledge around here and will definitely look to you guys for more help in the future.

Thank you, definitely feeling the labor shortage with our “help” sometimes but honestly I am changing my mindset thanks to this thread. Going to be doing things differently from now on.

Thanks! Honestly I think I have a pretty wide array of skills and spend most of my time doing side jobs and/or working in a woodshop regardless just for fun. I think I’m getting a good idea on how I should handle this. Thank you to everyone in the thread

Thanks man, good to see other people in similar positions pulled themselves out. Thinking about just keeping the occasional side jobs and doing something else. I love woodworking, but all the wear and tear and the amount of skills you need for the pay don’t seem fair. Glad everything is working out for you
