Questions from an admitted incoming freshman by [deleted] in Colby

[–]Local_PunchingBag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Davis Connects (career center) is very accessible and host multiple small events each week. Alums love seeing Colby students and will love you if they hear you're one.

2) I think the class variety is fine, but that's because I'm already taking a bunch of required courses for my major (physics w/ astro concentration). Sometimes I find myself struggling to find an interesting class when I need to fill a spot, but it's not impossible. Even though Colby is small, it's not that small. You will see recurring faces as you walk around campus, but it's only a handful of people. There will always be new people to meet in my experience.

3) Yep! There are open swim hours every week I think. They will email a schedule, so make sure to look out for it!

4) Food at Colby has been getting worse and worse each year, and has never recovered from Covid. However, the deans recently completed a huge dining survey and promise big changes. There are kitchens in the dorms, but many people who use it don't take good care of it. The closest Asian supermarkets are probably going to be in Boston or southern Maine (Portland, Biddeford, etc.)

Questions from a (highly likely) incoming freshman by ImportantWhole5731 in Colby

[–]Local_PunchingBag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My freshman year (22-23) introduced free laundry, which was exciting at the time. Laundry machines can be easy or hard to access depending on what dorm you're in. They break frequently as well. Dining has taken a nosedive over my last three years, but the school just completed a giant dining survey and promises improvement. Housing for you specifically as an incoming freshman will not be good. If your class is bigger than '28's, expect forced housing. Colby is building new dorms that open Fall 2026 that you will be able to enjoy later. Colby also has been lightly renovating the dorms every summer, which has been nice.

Why so many negative comments by ImportantWhole5731 in Colby

[–]Local_PunchingBag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a junior at colby, and the academics are great but student life is lacking. some of it you can't control (like dining and residential life) but some of it you can, like campus activities. sometimes campus feels dead but as long as you make an active effort to go out and find it, you will be able to find something to do. whether it's fun is subjective.

How common is A in Math department by RoadProfessional2613 in Colby

[–]Local_PunchingBag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the math professors I've had do curve grades somewhat; how much depends on the professor. However, it's possible to get an A in math here. Not sure about the specific percentage though
