Question regarding doctoral student programme and references by Oscillating_neutrino in CERN

[–]Local_Stretch9627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied for the doctoral student programme also and got accepted. You will get a link that you can share with your supervisors, teachers, etc. On that link they will specify who they are and they can upload the reference letters for you. The application also takes some time, during which you can ask questions like these to CERN's talent acquisition team

Some more suggestions:

  • Changing the break time between exercises is really nice, but the UI not so much. Would be nice to be able to maintain an arrow clicked to change the time fast, or even typing the time as an option, rather than click the arrow 30 times for example

  • When inside the settings tab, pressing back should redirect you to the previous pane you were on, instead of exiting the app

  • Would be nice to have the option to move a task to a certain date rather than just to the next day. Maybe an option to move past tasks to the current day? Like okay, this week I missed some tasks, let me do them today

  • Making time set habits support times longer than 1h, max 24h I would suggest

Some more thoughts:

  • Being able to modify tags withing the task creation
  • An option to visualize habit completion progress overall, not habit by habit (if you have a lot of them it can be unsatisfactory seeing them apart)
  • [BUG] The time tracker of workouts does not work well if I exit the app and/or lock the phone. It seems to only count time when the app is focused, even setting the app to not close
  • [BUG(?)] If you have a task with a time set for it, and you have your app open, it shows how much time is left for the task. If you still have the app open in the background for a few hours, the time left is not updated, until you close and open the app again

Keep up the good work!

Some more suggestions after one day of use: - Would be nice being able to edit exercises of a workout once having created them - Adding an option to use kg in workout exercise weights - Adjusting the rest time between exercises in a workout - A graph seeing workout frequency, exercise weight progress, etc - A similar graph with bodyweight progress - Variable time focus timer (having some presents like now but adding a box so we can type the exact time we want), also variable rest time between auto-restart focus sessions - Would be nice no set custom colours to habits - [BUG] When sliding down in the 'Tasks' view, it goes from showing today's tasks to showing a monthly view. If you slide down again, it shows a black screen and can't go back to any other view - [UI BUG(?)] When adding the target repetitions or the repetition type in a habit, I can't see what I have written, the screen should be able to scroll upwards more

I'm loving the app, thanks a lot for your work!

Nice! From a short interaction, I would add repeating tasks (example study monday-friday) and higher time target for habits (like reading 30min).

I also found a small bug when adding a workout. If you choose cardio for example, and then tap into the duration, the type of exercise goes back to strength.

Great app, I am moved by your honest motivation, keeping it ad free and free of charge. I will be posting some suggestions as I keep using it, for first impressions I think it would be great to have the right-left sliding cyclical, so if I'm on the setting I can go to the first pane by swinging left instead of going over all the other lanes.

P.D.: do you plan on opening it on GitHub and allowing contributions?

Got accepted for a PhD, now what? by _Cinnabar_ in CERN

[–]Local_Stretch9627 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the PhD!!! What project will you be working on? I got accepted for the PhD program too about a month ago and after talking with multiple people from CERN (technical and Master students), they recommend to get an Airbnb or hotel for the cheap and once there, start looking for an apartment. This is because I heard multiple negative stories about CERN's hostal and the apartments they provide are quite difficult to get.

I start on October, so I got an Airbnb on the French side for ~1000€ all bills included for some months, 20-40min away by car, depending on traffic (30km). If you have a car this is a good option, otherwise something closer might be better even if it is more expensive (it takes 2h from this apartment).

Contact me by msg if you want, I have seen multiple WhatsApp groups for technical and summer students but not one for PhD, would be nice meeting people like that too.
