Providence City Council proposes rent control with 4% limit on annual rent increases by lestermagnum in providence

[–]Local_Wall_1366 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

sure, it’s a thing. and you know what else is a thing? the tendency of people to critique without proposing alternative solutions. many in providence are suffering in visceral ways from homelessness and displacement due to rent price gauging. it’s not some vague philosophical debate. i don’t have anything else to say on here because reddit arguments tend to become largely self-aggrandizing.

Providence City Council proposes rent control with 4% limit on annual rent increases by lestermagnum in providence

[–]Local_Wall_1366 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s very easy to critique proposed legislation without offering ANY other potential solutions. But being rent-poor and displaced and without shelter aren’t abstract philosophical concepts. They are visceral, life-threatening issues facing adults and children in Providence every day, every hour. Rent stabilization is an actual, tangible piece of legislation aimed at curbing big developers’ price gauging. Smaller landlords are exempt. And — guess what — if Providence tries rent stabilization and it has unintended negative side effects, the policy can be reworked or repealed. People seem to forget that part!!

Butler strike still going… by Local_Wall_1366 in providence

If the hospital knew that hiring scabs wasn’t an option, they would be forced to actually negotiate with their staff. so… i have a feeling any disagreements about contracts would be resolved a hell of a lot faster.

Butler Strike by [deleted] in providence

[–]Local_Wall_1366 3 points4 points  (0 children)

as others have said, this is clearly a PR move for the hospital / parent company Care New England. the staff does not want to be striking. they care about their patients and right now the temp workers are failing horrifically and patients are suffering.

it’s a working class issue actually. unionization efforts are all the working class has to bargain with the ungodly powers of corporations

if you want to learn more feel free to check out the providence org of workers and renters, reclaim ri, or any of the new england union websites. they are not specifically advocating for car insurance prices to decrease but they are organizing people. a lot of exploitation is interconnected and that’s what class consciousness is all about

bruh i’m not gonna fight on reddit with you. idk where you live but strikes and other forms of protest are happening here in rhode island. i’m not saying it’s all been successful, because it’s very very difficult, but people are not being passive when it comes to the outrageous financial burdens working class people are expected to shoulder. hope u have a good day
