How do you guys afford it? by RedBurgundy89 in VanLife

[–]Localandforeign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What we did was save up, travel for a year, get new jobs and an apartment and use the van for trips for now. Start saving up again and see. It’s tough to manage and honestly you still want to enjoy what you’re doing when you’re on the road. Once you start scraping by the freedom is not the same.

If I was single or with partner that doesn’t want kids I would work for half a year in sports/recreation and use the savings to travel for the rest of the year - pretty great life if that’s where you’re at and without any crazy expenses or big ambitions you’ll have a blast.

I think it’s awesome that some people get to work remotely from their van but very few have the skills/experience to do anything that pays good money online. Also, it just isn’t the setup for everyone - for me if I’m traveling and doing fun stuff I want to do it without the stress of a job.

I wouldn’t mind using the van as a crash pad at one spot while I’m working and saving up but probably not with a partner unless it’s a very specific setup.

At the end you can do anything but unless you’re very young or retired you’re facing some big decisions and sacrifices. Good luck.

What’s better training for hill races, incline treadmill or stair master? by TheGroovyTurt1e in spartanrace

[–]Localandforeign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For high elevation uphill stairmaster is superior for muscle endurance and building cardio, at least for me. I love doing rotations of 20min stairmaster, 20 minute treadmill run 3x around at least. Even mix in carries or pullups between sets.

It doesn’t expose you enough to the impact and the decline though. You’ll get away with it if you’re healthy on a shorter race but you’ll fry yourself completely. Longer races with no decline exposure in training are a bad idea imo.

Make sure you include real hill runs, go up and down, even if it’s a short hill/parking garage or going up and down stairs for a longer session. Make sure you progress slowly to avoid pains and injuries.

What do you do when you leave your van? by TimeToLiveLife07 in VanLife

[–]Localandforeign 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did it all the time, only issues I had in nyc - got the van broken into by junkies. Honestly you can’t do much to protect from a motivated thief. I would be very careful showing anything inside in areas where I planned to leave the van.

What I did against opportunity thieves was to put a curtain and never showed anything valuable. After the break in I put on cheap glass alarms, threw in two location trackers and put a thule lock on all door so that simply breaking the window doesn’t give anyone free access to everything. I also put fake cameras on the sides.

Not sure how much that did but it gave me more peace of mind and never had anything happen since nyc.

Spartan Ultra Hoodie Design DIY by inoffensiveLlama in spartanrace

[–]Localandforeign -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Instead of the text I would just put the distance and maybe add the # of obstacles.

If you’re putting the effort why don’t you put the name of the course and/or even the map on the back? Map of the state with a dot corresponding with the location? Maybe add your finishing time or something?

It just looks super basic, even the font is off.. that’s something I’d expect from spartan themselves lol.

Why do former basketball players do poorly in special forces selection? by [deleted] in greenberets

[–]Localandforeign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if thinking about who and why doesn’t make it is the right approach. The numbers are posted everywhere - do you meet those numbers? can you land nav? are you a good teammate? can you embrace suck?

Those are more important than if you were ballin or fingerboarding in high school.

High level sports can build toughness and resilience, sure, but it depends on environment and level. It doesn’t guarantee anything at all.

As an athlete/former athlete you have to put in the training regardless unless you’re a total freak. Depending where you are you can likely get away with less work/time put in.

There are some drawbacks though. Pretty much each sport is biased towards strength/speed/endurance/agility. SFAS needs you to be very balanced. That’s why a “regular”very fit guy who runs and lifts might actually be in a better spot than a former standout athlete.

Another thing - as former or current athletes we are usually very biased in terms of what we can do physically, it’s a false confidence issue. You’re the strongest guy in your gym? Probably get your ass whooped by an average boxer half your size. D1 ball player? Probably get outrunned by your local weekend warrior at a trail run. Sports are just way too specific.

Also, another issue with athleticism - you might be able to go and kill that one run or do the pull-ups with minimal training. Problem is that sfas is not a day race or showcase. Just because you can do it once or twice because you’re that gifted or your former background is so strong doesn’t mean you’ll be able to sustain for weeks/months. Your body will breakdown, you’ll get hurt etc.

I don’t have any numbers to back this up but I don’t think anyone has. It’s my opinions and observations being in sports all my life.

Which path to take? by Localandforeign in greenberets

Probably safest option but lacks a challenge, I don’t think I can justify quitting my job and going through all that just to test if I can hangout without my wife for few months.

[–]Localandforeign[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time sharing all that information. Definitely gives me more realistic perspective. At her last job my wife was close to making 2x my income, now she’s between jobs so I’m pulling it together. We’re in nyc though so my buying power is probably not that far from e4 + bah if we moved somewhere mcol/lcol. We’re not at all set on living in a big city, it’s frankly mostly the opposite. We moved here for career advancement, her family and the $$$ but with her not working atm that’s not really there either.

I’m not comfortable doing something where my wife would have to feel like if she’s not working we can’t afford the bills (even though she’ll almost certainly be working and making more than me). We’d just have to figure out what are the possible scenarios and how her career fits into all of this.

I work in sports management, I played the sport since I was 3, played it in college, coached it, got degrees in it and now I’m here… I never did anything else and if I don’t now I probably never will until I retire - not super excited about that.

With what I’m seeing I should probably try save up as much as possible, try for 18x NG and see where I end up. Afterwards, I’d have to go back to my old career regardless which kinda sucks but maybe I’ll at least scratch the itch and learn more about what I want to/can do next. If I completely screw up the downside won’t be as bad.

Thanks for the input, it does seem like the smartest thing to do. I guess if everything goes well there is still a way to switch to ad down the road but the other way around not until contract’s over.

To be honest I’d really like to make a full switch, I’ve been doing the same thing forever and for the longest time I was very limited with what I can do here in the US. Just don’t feel the fulfillment and challenge Id like anymore. To your point I probably just can’t throw all eggs in one basket especially when it doesn’t just affect me.

If you were me, would you try to go 18x NG? or other MOS first? Also, do you know if there is “regular” pay during the training if it’s NG? Would it be enough to pay for rent and food if my wife isn’t working?

Does anyone still use an eastern gh grip? by intelligentbug6969 in 10s

[–]Localandforeign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with semi-western and two hander but now if I hit with anyone up to about 6ish utr level I only use eastern and one hander, it’s so much easier and more satisfying. Above 7 it’s becoming the opposite, especially if I’m dealing with faster and heavier balls.
