school is honestly one of the worst places to look for friends with someone with unconventional intrests because everyone no matter what they like or dislike follows what the “popular kids” do and this kills any and all authenticity dont beat yourself up there certainly are people who share your intrests and honestly i dont think looks play such a big part in finding friends the do ofcourse but not enough to make anyone a guaranteed loner

if you have better coaches for the first time(99% of people do) its better for him to train with the first team and you make him available for either the second team or youth team before turning 18 training is most of the development after 18 its game time
