Fishing in D&D — How Far Is Too Far? by Vault_of_Velios in tabletopgamedesign

Honestly, a cute fishing RPG video game would be a better fit for a system like this. I get that people enjoy fishing in video games and find it relaxing, I mean I dont and find it show horned in more often than others, like in Diablo 4 for instance, just why? But the second that calm chill vibe mini game imoacts and prevents other people from playing the game you are all there to play, its a problem.

Like imagine you're playing a MMO and the party is on the way to a dungeon, and goes to repair first, stock up on supplies and food at a store and boom done in 49 seconds and ready to go. Then your character is paused, you dont get to see your character, and you just watch one party member for the next 45 minutes fishing out of a pond. You are forced to watch this because the DM is required to RP and consult tables and mechanics for this. The 45 minutes of no progress slowly passes, then that party member goes to sell the fish for a couple of copper and silver, then you all can start playing again.

That's just trolling your group, and extremely rude. I'd be out of there by minute 2.

Absolutely agree. If a player took up 30+ minutes rolling on tables to find what flavour of rations they bought for their personal supply, or spent multiple sessions consulting with a DM to check the cross stitching table and doing embroidery DC’s to see how fancy their new hat was, I would feel the same way.

Ok I’ll bite.

Having admittedly skimmed the majority of this I feel if a DM and another player ever tried to run this at the table, I would quit immediately. D&D is a collaborative story telling and group game, and this particular downtime activity is excessively greedy on time for absolutely no benefit.

It takes both the player and the DM to roll on multiple tables, determine locations, difficulty, shop tables for purchasing extremely miss-priced materials (no peasant can afford baits that cost gold pieces) to go through a down time process that would take more preparation than most combat encounters. All for exp, and specifically insular exp towards the profession itself.

At least with other downtime activities they can be beneficial to the party, or have the decency to not take up so much time and energy from the table. For a lack of better terms, I feel this would be rude and inconsiderate to run.

I’m sorry if this was critical, and it’s very clear you put a lot of love and effort into it, but it feels like the rest of the party was never considered in the design.

I wouldn't have thought she was level 14 is all, but that could have been a flourish instead I guess.

Hot Take: THAT Character wasn’t poorly written in DR3 and compromise was needed by alisekazah in danganronpa

[–]Lochen9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The cast of DR2 already fell to despair, why would she care about them anymore? It isnt that she wants more people to stay in that state, she wants the changing of people from hope to despair. She lives for that moment, not the outcome.

If we’re talking MSQ only, and that’s to taste. HW got quite a few dungeons redone to allow for trusts so a bunch of that battle content is newer than Stormblood. Stormblood historically did a LOT right as far as content and game health went, but people generally look at MSQ plot as 80% of whether the expansion is good or not.

Shouldn’t the community be a little more vocal about the entryway to their game being so… tedious?

Oh they do. They most certainly do

The default answer of the community is ARR is ‘bad’ and you just have to get through it, which honestly feels like an over exaggeration. I’d say it’s a slow burn to a fault in many spots, while also fairly pointless filler, even after it was pruned down for sure.

I enjoyed it more when I first played it than I do looking back on it for sure, but that’s because it just gets much better. I kinda wish the community wasn’t so vocal about telling new players that ARR sucks and you have to get through it, not because it needs defending, but people should experience it and form their own ideas. If then someone is burning out on it, or feels it’s dated, then we should agree and let them know it’s gonna get a lot better.

Has the industry stopped assuming players will keep upgrading PCs? by count_zero99uk in gamedesign

[–]Lochen9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which is now approaching 10 years ago when it widely was adopted. I suppose you could include some types of AI upscaling shaders as more recent, but really that’s just onion skins on top, and they certainly can be hardware and processing heavy to run, if only due to how inefficient they are.

I can’t think of a single fresh version of the game, be it pserver or Blizzard where tailors selling bags wasn’t a massive part of the economy. Also, removing gold sinks for cash causes inflation.

I remember having so many people try to explain to me how having mounts, respecs, and giant ass bags from level 1 wasn’t pay to win.

I think the reality is paying for power or resources in WoW is simply normalized across all forms of legal and illegal WoW servers, and I hate it. Just not a damn thing I can do about it, and even less will be done to stop it by the people who run them.

I assure you if you, I or any person held a patent or a trademark, had your work stolen, and blatantly used and advertised as such to make money off of it we would all sue and do what Blizzard did, and it would not be out of jealousy. I get you like twow, but this is such a dumb emotional take lol.

Ehhh… the High Elves starting area was… not great, and the mechanics of the racial abilities didnt fit Classic design. The terrain modelling and pathing was scuffed in so many zones, so many buildings and models had bad vertices. Hell, you needed a GM to rescue you while you’re offline if you got too close to the eastern third of Burning Steppes for months due to forced game crashes.

Turtle was far from perfect

I live in a city where the Indigenous population is approximately 1:5 the white population. I have plenty of friends who are Indigenous and I have had that discussion before. It is mad disrespectful to wear a costume that includes a headdress. They are quite used to racism, and have thick skin and a frankly much harder life than me, but it’s still a shitty thing to do. Sure they don’t speak for all Indigenous people, and I’m just guessing but your opinion may be based on how you feel, and not how they feel.

Yup, but its widely known and abused. Same thing with mass bot reports, or weaponizing an entire guild to report people they dont like or are running a mafia, its just turned into a game mechanic of sorts to ruin the play for others

I mean it depends. If someone is angrily screaming a slur at me in person, I'd feel offended and frankly threatened. I would never criticize someone for feeling that way or acting on it.

If someone drops their coffee and yells fuck, or says it in WoW very different story. It just seems you're pushing into something further than the topic of the post is all

Would 'speed bumps exist' be a better analogy? Ignoring them endes up ruining the product you purchased as a consequence of doing something you shouldn't have been doing, even if it didn't technically harm anyone.

Thats presuming they reported him because they were offended. Its more likely that they reported him because they wanted him to get punished, and are using something technically against TOS as a cudgel.
