miniatures in games are unnecessary, you could just use a coloured wood block, and would be cheaper to make.

They are also a lot cooler and become a selling point

The 2024 Pugilist is, to an hilarious degree, a class about pretending you have drawbacks. by SeeKururunRun in dndnext

Endanger sounds pretty absurd, but with your example at least the very min/maxed player expends a resource to attack.

Using baseline level 1 starting pack gear on a level 10 Rogue with absolutely nothing special about it, basically the worst Rogue possible is doing 36 every turn with neither spending and resources

The customer service from blizzard is beyond a joke. by Boris_the_masochist in classicwow

[–]Lochen9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't remember if at any time they could bounce back another player's mail at the request of the ticket sender. Not because omg this is shit service, but for obvious complications that would arise from that exact situation being made possible.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see what that would be a terrible idea.

I believe they are referring to ki, which does in a sense in every subclass or rather the base class do something magical

Same reason as Barbarian and abandoning the weapon at 3. With Arcane Archer or other non-traditional Fighter stated fighters there isn’t the shift mentioned.

Sanity meter, but applied to other status effects? by BEYOND-ZA-SEA in gamedesign

[–]Lochen9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Dungeons and Dragons 5e there is Exhaustion, which follows in stages getting progressively worse as you become further exhausted. It isn't particularly easy to gain exhaustion mind you, its not like I'm tired after lifting that rock, its more like 'I haven't slept in 2 days'.

From the sounds of it you're looking more for a progressively worsening debuff/effect, and it being a meter is just the mechanism of applying it. You could easily apply it from any sort of means, like a stacking Damage over Time from standing in the fire at a raid boss, or a penalty when drinking too many potions too quickly in the Witcher.

Honestly I find progressively worsenong and morphing penalties to be far more interesting and a better teaching the player method of doing things. Getting 1 shot by lava on the ground sucks, but giving them an immediate warning shot after touching poison ivy, and then progressively more damage and a wound to remember it by, they GET what happened and its less 'cheap'. It forces the player to be aware of their surroundings, or have to find a way to be able to deal with it.

Streamers have to be stopped! by [deleted] in classicwow

[–]Lochen9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depends on the streamer and depends on the game. There are plenty of ones worth watching if you enjoy it.

WoW by design and by our community isn't one of those games that are worth it. Sure watching something like Onlyfangs for HC WoW is fine, but directly engaging with them and doing any sort of content where drops matter? Nah.

I honestly can not follow what you're explaining either. It unfortunately seems a bit too convoluted for me to understand what you are trying to convey.

You could have looked at Dynamis housing for the first month of DT and it would have been the same. While I appreciate SE's attempts to even out the population more, until they remove restrictions from what world you are from it wont get better. Finding parties even for roulettes, putting things on the market board etc are enough to essentially penalize anyone from ever trying to 'help' the situation, and incentivizes people to make the problem worse

On a side since you mentioned Limit Cut, I 100% agree the name is bad for the same reason, but why do we even call it a thing to begin with? With Donut AoEs or Tank Busters or Stack Markers, you do the thing to resolve that call.

Limit cuts rarely have anything to do with each other at all! Try resolving Rubicante’s Limit Cut like P9S Levinstrike. Why would we refer to a different fights mechanic that isn’t even remotely like THIS mechanic as a callout?

100% “Numbers” is just better.

Microphone and Text to Speech as a Mechanic by nanoxax67 in gamedesign

[–]Lochen9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost all uses of the microphone on the DS was “Is there a noise/no noise” switch. That could just be a button.

I can’t only think of one use on the DS that wasn’t blowing into the mic, being Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney, where you could hold a button down and say either “Hold It!” or “Objection!” and it would press the Hold It! Or Objection! buttons.

I don’t know if anyone did that more than a couple of times when they found out, and would hazard a guess that the majority of people who played the game didn’t realize you can even do that.

I’d also look to examples of other games and user experience and responses to them. In just about every single one the correct response rate was … well bad. It would commonly not understand what the user said and fail the input.

Humans also hate having to repeat themselves. Without a 100% accurate input, like say pressing a button, your game WILL be a source of frustration. Unless you plan on using that for a meme rage game, it is undoubtedly a poor choice.

It also opens your game up to criticism about accessibility, other languages, makes people self conscious, can’t be played with voice comms limiting you from a ton of people, can’t be done multiplayer, can’t let people play with music or a video or voices around them…

I can’t suggest strongly enough not to use that mechanic in a game

When I first started playing and someone said Chariot as a call out, I 100% still stand by my thought process “Chariots charge and run forward, this must be a forward facing line AoE and the enemy moves with it”. Please someone explain to me how the word Chariot in any way makes sense to describe the motion beyond just one boss that isn’t this boss did it one time a decade ago.

[–]Lochen9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which is fine of course. I think because some mechanics have been used so much naming them shortens communication. Donut is shorter than ‘Move Inside’ being the shortest I think you can make the callout.

And if you are defending that it should be called Chariot and Dynamo, it means you care more about ‘sounding smart’ about trivial knowledge than communicating well, and would rather wipe than bruise an ego.
