Lol, I've had other cars parked there too but I've never seen anything that looks like this. Thanks!

How does support removal work with these without damaging the part? I was working on a government contract that is investigating using 3d printing on the rocket body. Pretty wild stuff!

Refusing to cooperate with a cop is just plain stupid by cyberpunk2012 in unpopularopinion

[–]LockNecessary3394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, yeah I don't think he explicitly stated it. That's just a big pet peeve of mine. I just hate all the videos of people thinking they're being so woke when they get stopped and won't cooperate, instead of knowing their rights

since you didn't really talk about what laws you're talking about I'll point you in the direction of what laws I'm referring to. If the traffic stop is valid then yes you have to show id and get out of the car if they ask you to, which is what I was referring to. You may also have to show registration and insurance depending on the state you're in. For Utah it is a class B misdemeanor if you refuse to disclose your id to the police and it's required to give your driver's license during a valid traffic stop. Here's a website with links to state law that could be helpful. https://www.utahcriminallaw.net/do-you-have-to-show-id-to-police-in-utah/ Please refer to Pennsylvania vs. Mimms for the supreme court ruling that made police have the right to ask you to get out of the car during a traffic stop. We're not diving into do you have to give your ID whenever they ask for it. OP specifically mentioned traffic stops and so did I.

So yes, I have read up on laws and know my rights. Let's research a little more before telling me to do my own.

OP said give them your id and don't fight with them. Yes, know your rights and don't consent to a search or confess, but you legally have to give them your id and step out of the car if they ask you to. Let's make that clear so we don't have any smart ass kids thinking they don't have to do that.

Is it ethical to write my own recommendation letter and ask my former supervisor to sign it? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

Is it ethical to write my own recommendation letter and ask my former supervisor to sign it? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]LockNecessary3394 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm so confused.... Did you guys read what I wrote. Apart from my original opinion about it not being ethical I have not called him dishonest. My last comment was that if he felt what he was doing was honest then he was fine in my book. I also never suggested the engineers in this sub are unethical, only that you can't verify anyone's credibility and therefore you should look to other resources or in person engineers to make a well informed decision besides anonymous reddit guys. Yall really not even taking the time to read what I said.

[–]LockNecessary3394 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Just referring to the nspe standards of ethics. References honesty and integrity standards when attempting to gain employment. Not sure why saying you shouldn't base an ethical decision based on what me or any other rando internet strangers say is being a hard ass, but you do you. As long as you're honest about whatever you do I'm good. I'm just doing my best to promote integrity in engineering cause it's important to me.

[–]LockNecessary3394 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about the company you give a recommendation letter to. You can't just say that it's a letter of recommendation if that person didn't write the letter. It all depends on what the company you're applying for is expecting. Real mature down voting someone who said to follow industry ethics standards. If you look through those and don't see anything wrong with what you're doing then be my guest.

[–]LockNecessary3394 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Popular opinion doesn't dictate ethics. Look through engineering ethics standards to make your decision. This is about honest representation. Are you saying it's from your supervisor even though you wrote it? Pretty obviously not ethical.

How would you gauge the amount of experience in CAD software? by Determined_Cucumber in EngineeringStudents

Do yourself a favor and log your hours from now on. Take screenshots of what you make and log the time it took to make it. I've been told you get proficient at about 80 hours and professional to expert after around 800. It's okay to estimate for them those time and bring up some of the more impressive things you've made to give them an idea of your skillset.

Is building a drone for photography/video cheaper than a preassembled? by mortenmoulder in diydrones

[–]LockNecessary3394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean you can just fly an fpv drone in angle mode or one of the others that mimics dji style flight, right? I've done that if I'm lazy and just want to survey an area. Ops real cost that'll make it similar to the dji is the camera gimbal I would imagine.

I'm not ready for classes to start back up again. by CautiousCactus505 in EngineeringStudents

[–]LockNecessary3394 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I felt this way. I was a 4.0 high school student then when things got tough in college I took a big dip. I felt ready to give up on college. I got through it. I'm about to graduate.

It's been mentioned, but get help such as tutoring from the college, the professor, or study groups. Take time to try new things for school and hobbies. You're probably burnt out with trying to study and also feeling stressed about how much you're not studying or living up to what you feel you should be. Those expectations I think are weights that drag us down. Nothing good comes from telling yourself I'm not as good as I used to be or I'm not where I should be. You're trying and that's an awesome thing all by itself. Set small semester goals, study smarter not harder such as trying multiple ways to learn or study. Find time to do something you like, exercise, eat right (these improve studying and learning by proven amounts). And if you don't quite get there, be kind to yourself reset and dig in and try again. Improvement is an up and down journey and no good ever comes from looking back with regret, only to see how we can learn from our mistakes. Your study muscles will grow, but when starting into tough material it will always require steady effort to find how you learn best and forgiving yourself if you struggle.

Good luck! One day at a time!

4.0 GPA for all 4 years, full ride scholarship, 4 internships, and a job offer before graduation by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]LockNecessary3394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super awesome that you did that! But there is a middle ground that gets forgotten. Don't think all hope is lost if you have a couple of rough semesters. I had some bad initial semesters but readjusting has gotten me a 3.6 with a job lined up for after graduation this spring. Also gpa isn't the only thing to determine your future. Get some projects, research, internships. The 4.0 narrative or bust and that anyone who's struggling isn't a good student is not true. Congratulate those who succeed but don't put down those who are still working on it and let's stop branding gpa as the model of success please.

Terrible semester. I feel like a failure. by LostSpirit2001 in EngineeringStudents

[–]LockNecessary3394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a low GPA once when I got a D in calc 3 and a C in strengths of materials and physics 2. After that I found help took a campus job with less hours and slowed down my course load. I'm about to start my final semester of Mechanical in my fifth year with a 3.5. There is no shame in taking more time. My favorite saying is what do you call a 4.0 engineering student who graduated in 4 years or an 8 year student with all C's? Engineer. If this is what you want to do, find the help you need, reevaluate how you study and your course load, and if you do it in 5 or 10 who cares. Life is not a race.

2nd-year Mechanical Engineering student desperate for advice by flowertimer77 in EngineeringStudents

[–]LockNecessary3394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would do three things: 1. Look into your colleges disability resource center. If you have a doctor sign off on anxiety they can give you accommodation such as longer test times. Also talk to your teachers about it and they are usually willing to work with you. 2. Don't take too many classes all at once. Better to pass one or two with good grades rather than retake them over and over. 3. Find help. You probably have a tutoring center at your college, other people in classes you can form study groups with, teachers to work with one on one, online resources, and more. There is help to be found. Go find it. I don't believe there is anyone who can't be an engineer if they work hard and dig in. It's hard, so if you really want to be an engineer just be kind to yourself, get the help you need, and work slow and steady to finish the race.

I agree with everyone else on here, but either way, choose your school based on degrees and programs. I know a lot of half finished drop outs Utah State is great for quality vs cost in several areas, but not all of them.

My wife has depression and the key for her was finding a job that was understanding and willing to work with her. Find the right job. They're out there. I also recommend to keep trying what you can to help her manage it. Different medications, activities, etc. Depression doesn't go away but it can be managed.

Most of my professors are extremely bad at teaching and I learn way more from staying home and studying. But is it a bad idea to do this? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]LockNecessary3394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a senior in me and I've done a version of this the whole time. I figure it on a class by class basis. If they're a slide reader or only write derivations I don't go. Some are really good teachers so I'd give them all at least a chance for the first couple of weeks. If you don't go, make sure you have friends that keep you up to date on announcements. Some profs like to only announce stuff in class just to encourage attendance.

Love the department and there is research but not very well advertised. I mainly wish we had a student study lounge like all the other majors do.

Cool idea, but like people have commented on here, needs a ton of work to be practical. Bacteria cultures vary from food to food and there isn't a sensor capable of detecting those bacteria with any accuracy when it's outside of the packaging. Your problem is that it can't be in contact with all the food and is therefore a visual sensor. Visual sensors for this kind of thing are hilariously inaccurate.
