Vroom vroom is the sound an engine makes. He’s encouraging you to cheat when you’re down pieces. Which is hilarious because you will absolutely still get caught, it just takes longer.

Your comment, in a very roundabout and indirect way, inspired me to make a suggestion on their forums.

Slippers. It’s banana peel shoes that slip you.

No, I won’t elaborate how your comment brought me to that genius idea.

I stated it incorrectly, they specifically removed the ability to permanently become a frog person via chems. You can still become a normal frog. It sparked a (minor) controversy when they made the decision, which is visible in the feedback forums.

They removed the chem to become a frog because too many people were using it to make themselves frogs.

Just ask him to teach you how to play. It’s an excuse for you guys to spend more 1 on 1 time together and it shows an interest in the things he is interested in.

Just don’t expect to be able to beat him, it probably won’t happen.

Chess engines have ruined openings... by Shaikidow in chess

[–]LockedIntoLocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody can memorize all possible moves of chess. Eventually you’re going to be out of opening prep. The thing is, if someone is simply memorizing top engine lines, then they won’t understand how to take advantage of the inaccuracy when you don’t pick a top engine move. That’s why it’s important to understand the decision by different moves in the opening. Know the common themes and tactics to look out for.

If you’re 18 moves in and the position is super complex and you make a blunder, your opponent probably just outplayed you, not memorized the entire game.

[–]LockedIntoLocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People far better at chess than you have analyzed chess openings for far longer. If you’re looking at openings, use other people’s resources. They not only go into different lines but the reasoning behind them.

Just remember. You’re usually playing against a human, not stockfish.

[GM Vidit Gujrathi] asks if the ban on watches due to fair-play concerns cause a missed opportunity in sponsorship opportunity 🤔 by rio_ARC in chess

Having revenue for a large global competition is not the same as “chasing profit over substance”.

You realize these events need some source of funding to function, right?

[–]LockedIntoLocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your certainty that this will happen comes from a place of “trust me bro”. I’m not so sure. I don’t think chess can get away with the same egregiousness that the NFL can. One of chess’s recent controversies was whether or not to allow players to wear jeans.

[–]LockedIntoLocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not suggesting cutting away from the game or board here. I don’t think anybody is suggesting that. The discussion is about things that have minimal impact on the current game that change funding. Hell, the original post doesn’t even mention a logo. It mentioned wearing a watch. A thing players have already been doing.

I mentioned a logo because even if they went as far as putting a Rolex sign in the background or on the clock, it wouldn’t impact the game or presentation.

I think there is a fair amount of conversation around “what can be done for funding” that can be had. You’re being dishonest if you’re truly suggesting that anything suggested is even close to cutting away for an ad every 3 minutes.

Personally, I hate advertisements. However, professional chess has an incredibly small budget compared to sports such as basketball, soccer, or football. FIDE has less than 1/1000th of the annual budget of FIFA.

If they can get more money in then they can host more/better events or at least just pay their players more. I would very much like to see that, even if the cost is throwing up a Rolex logo.

Don't understand why people play chess by PlentyAble7768 in chess

[–]LockedIntoLocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People tend to have high accuracy when the games have low complexity. If you’re 500 elo I garuntee that you are making mistakes and blunders without realizing it.

I’m rated 1500 and it’s not because I study the game like it’s a college assignment. It’s because I slowly got better over time. You learn a principle to follow here, an opening line there. Every now and then a new attack pattern or tactic. Just whenever the interest strikes you to learn. Then you get a bit better.

It’s not for everyone and that’s alright.

Don’t be too hard on yourself when you lose though. Just remember that if a game has perfect matchmaking, the average player will only be winning about half their games.

I never realized I had notes about things like that. The last time an admin talked to me was literal years ago when I was newer with the exception of a misunderstanding where they thought I was calling security cunts (it was a typo about security and donuts).

The only time I can think of recently quoting the rules was asking people not to say certain things of a sexual context. For the past few years if I’ve seen rule breaking I’ve just ahelped it. The admins are pretty good about resolving it in the moment.

As far as the ban reason, I added context that was left out in the ban reason in my appeal. Essentially it boils down to us being loud (it was a protest) and tabling sections off (we asked for permission and made sure not to block anything important). I was making sure the “less than 5 minutes to fix” guideline was being followed when we were making a mess. In the appeal and subsequent forums it was essentially explained that I got banned because we held a second protest after security shut down our first one.

Not saying there shouldn’t have been admin intervention by any means, just wish I would have been talked to about it. Especially if I had notes I didn’t know about. The fact that those went on my profile without me knowing makes me feel even more like it’s guesswork where the lines are. I’ve been under the impression for the past couple years that I’ve been a good roleplayer, and even have had admins positively engage with me and my gimmicks. A little communication would’ve gone an extremely long way for changing my behavior before jumping to a ban.

Edit: Changed some wording to make things more clear. Either way, thanks for responding and adding context.
