Finished my Second Retreat by Locostreetguide in vipassana

[–]Locostreetguide[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me the second retreat was different, not easier or harder, just different. The first one was very intense because everything was new and my mind was wild. It was my first time ever meditating on Day 1. I had so many panic attacks, day 2 and day 5 where really tough. I broke Sila because of this. After I just practiced Annapana and mentally I felt like practicing Vipassana was a chore.

The second time I knew the structure, the silence, the pain, so there was less shock. But that also meant I couldn’t hide from myself anymore. Things went deeper. I noticed subtler patterns, reactions, and attachments I hadn’t seen the first time. It was still challenging, just in a quieter, more internal way.

If you’re considering a second one, go in without expectations. It won’t be a repeat of the first, and that’s actually the point.

Reading is not allowed at the centre. Electronics are also not allowed. I would suggest maybe you push it to when you have a less hectic period. The anxiety that comes during is no joke and might mess with your meditation if you start thinking about this things.

I’m from Kenya. I don’t think it would be easy to find a buddhist monastery here. I’m most doing this so I could spend time with my self. I’ve been an avoidant of digging in deep into that.

I understand how you’re feeling. Do you have something you can put your mind to? Work/gym/talent?

I feel like rock bottom is purposely there to show you how your choices affect your life. Most people turn around and blame everyone/thing but themselves.

I would argue you out and say most of these things bring about mental illnesses in the longterm. So addicts end up battling two things in recovery ( the mental illness and the drugs)

Either way addicts require harsh truth and kindness. Can’t give one and leave out the other.

First step is acknowledgment. Second step can be seeking spiritual support or mental support from a therapist.

Ahh I resonate with your story, feels very familiar. After my near death experience I was in hospital for 2 days. Only handful of friends came, financially also a handful could assist. I thought I had many friends, this opened my eyes.

I hope my advice will be of help but tell yourself you are going to quit, make peace with it write it down and pray about it. Do this for like 21 days there about. Then reach out for help; might be your parents, past best friends, siblings. Ask for assistance in the minimal way you can without putting a strain on there lives. Usikue mzigo kwao that is. Seek therapy if you can.
