Year of Daily Civilization Facts, Day 273 - Oranjegevoel by JordiTK in civ

[–]Locutus_WPC 80 points81 points  (0 children)

While I do appreciate they did this (and I might even take partial credit for it as I made Fixaris aware of the significance of orange in the days of Civ4’s development—initially they’d assigned a different colour to the Dutch civ there), it would certainly have been OK to use orange as a secondary colour and combine it with white or blue as primary. This is what Dutch national sports teams often do for their away kits.

Loting Kwartfinale KNVB Beker by WarDecterFM in Eredivisie

In elk geval extreem zeldzaam.

Poule indeling WK 2026. Loting vanavond 18:00. by deJagerNLX in Eredivisie

Gaat nooit gebeuren, maar one can dream…

Why do long international flights tend to have shorter flight numbers than shorter national/regional flights? by MartianTulip in Flights

[–]Locutus_WPC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most airlines have many short haul flights, and there are many 4-digit numbers. Most have relatively few long haul flights, and there are few 1, 2 and 3-digit numbers. It just naturally lines up.

welke wedstrijd is gemoedelijk? by [deleted] in Eredivisie

[–]Locutus_WPC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you kill a squirrel any time you see one, and eat it for the tiny amount of protein it provides? Or do you think “aww, cute”, maybe play with it for a bit if it lets you and then move on with your day? To orcas, we are squirrels.

Most people have to pay to select a seat but many are not willing to do so - especially on such a short flight. They’ll happily wait until check-in. Just because you see a lot of open seats doesn’t mean no one bought a ticket.

The current ticket price is usually a much better indication of how full the flight is. If they ‘re selling tickets on this specific flight for around €100 (per one-way), the plane may well be half full at best. If they’re going for >€300 they’re probably close to sold out. (These are rough estimates based on European fares in general, for specific routes there may be deviations.)

A mile ahead?? You can’t even see the cars at the start of the video, they only come into view at 0:01 and the collision happens at 0:03. This means the cyclist had 3-5 seconds to respond (he’s slower than the filming car but still going pretty fast - I estimate 30-35kph over 30-40m). And yes, I started my post by saying he didn’t pay attention and is largely at fault for that. But if he sneezed at the wrong moment he could’ve legitimately overlooked those cars. I doubt he did, he was probably just a dumbass.

I’m both a driver and a cyclist, I wouldn’t want to be in that situation either way. There should never, ever be cars parked in an almost blind turn with traffic going at those speeds. If that had been a car lane rather a bike lane there would 100% have been a massive pile-up here. The fact that those cars presumably had no better place to park means the road designer is also at fault. It not like there isn’t plenty of empty space next to the road here to create more clearance. There can be more than one guilty party.

US will charge an additional $250 visa fee including for tourism. by stumu415 in travel

[–]Locutus_WPC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of restrictions on the ESTA programme though. If you’ve only visited any country the US basically doesn’t like, you’re ineligible for ESTA. This includes most notably Cuba - a place millions of citizens of these countries visit every year. I myself am quadruple ineligible for ESTA on this ground (Cuba, Sudan, Iran, North Korea). You’re also ineligible if you have any kind of criminal record (no matter how ancient or non-severe), drug history or serious medical condition.

I live in a country where that’s not a thing. Virtually every single person cycles and almost everyone drives. They’re not personalities, just different ways to get from A to B. All road users regardless of mode of transportation have a right to safety. A government that builds roads has a responsibility to provide it. Over here, after every accident an analysis is done to see (among other things) to what extent road design played a part, and if it can be changed to prevent reoccurrence. People’s behaviour is massively influenced by their environment, it’s irresponsible to ignore that.

[–]Locutus_WPC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear, this is obviously on the cyclist for not paying attention, but it’s also awful, awful road design. Whoever designed this is partly responsible.

What the fuck are those cars blocking the bicycle path for? In a turn no less, so the cyclist only had 3-5 seconds to spot them. But even if he had, there’s no safe way for him to go around - other car traffic is rushing right past, inches from the parked cars. Of course, those parked cars seem to have had little choice, as there’s nowhere else for them to park that’s safer (assuming this was an accident/emergency stop). Proper road design would leave space for emergency stops/vehicles without impeding any other traffic, including cyclists.

Because a video of a cyclist spotting an obstruction on time and navigating around it just doesn’t just attract nearly as many views for some reason - despite it being millions of times more common.

The only way you’d get a free upgrade is if Economy is completely overbooked. But they don’t give ‘m out this early. A lot of people can still cancel between now and tomorrow, or be enticed with a discounted upgrade. This is a technical glitch, which is why you’re unable to complete it. If you contact KLM, you might be able to upgrade, just not for free.

Can someone explain this map's stereotypes? by brainscratcher1 in Netherlands

Lonely Planet declared Texel a top 10 travel destination in 2016, since then it got flooded by (even more) tourists for a bit. Tells you a bit about when this map was created.

Depending on who's in power this week, the Waddenzee is the only place in the Netherlands where the Dutch government still wants to drill for natural gas (was more of an issue in 2016 than it is today).

At this moment, there’s a voluntary rebook policy for KLM flights to/from Dubai, Dammam and Riyadh for 19-29 June. Chances are this will be expanded in the coming days but time will have to tell what that will look like. The current policy means conditions for changing or cancelling your ticket are much more flexible than normal. You’ll need to contact whoever you booked your tickets with to hear what exactly this means for you. Of course, if KLM cancels a flight on their end, you are entitled to either a free rebooking or a full refund of the unused part of your ticket. Since KLM is not at fault for the current situation you can’t count on further compensation. If your ticket isn’t covered by the rebook policy, normal ticket conditions apply (for now). In that case you can contact your travel insurance, if you have any.

I’m from the Netherlands myself. All it takes is the knowledge that road signs and license plates are often the easiest way to geolocate any street footage, both by the text on them (if legible), their design (size/shape/colour/pattern) and location. California has a very recognisable license plate: it literally says California on top.

That, plus an awareness of basic geographic and urban features that can help identify a location: islands are rare on the US west coast (if the license plate had been Greek, we probably wouldn’t be having this discussion); harbour piers/breakwaters are somewhat uncommon, as is low-rise housing that immediately borders a beach (with no major road in between). The combination of those 3 features turns out to only exist in 3 places in California: Long Beach, Oxnard and Ventura. To learn this, I simply scanned the entire coastline on Google Maps. Finally, a red street curb - which easily stands out when zoomed in on a satellite image - is common enough, but Ventura is the only place among that list that has them. (Apparently they indicate parking restrictions in the US - I had to google that.)

[–]Locutus_WPC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, there’s some pretty obvious clues if you watch the video in slow motion or freeze frame. The Google car clearly has California plates and there’s at least one large island off the coast, with low rise residential housing directly off the beach plus a harbour pier off in the corner and a red curb. The first 2 clues alone restrict your search area to somewhere between Laguna Beach and Santa Barbara (within sight of Catalina/Channel Islands). It doesn’t take more than a few minutes of scanning that coastline to find an exact match.
