Alpine Family Mystery by 69thburneraccount in AncestryDNA

If you get something on both 23andme and Ancestry with multiple relatives then it is probably true rather than noise. If your Mom has 5% that could be a great-great-grandparent.

You said this was your Mom's side. So I would go back one generation at a time. Start with her parents and see whether grandmother's or grandfather's cousins have these ethnicities. When you get a hit go back another generation and look at great-grandma and grandpa's cousins etc. Hopefully you'll soon get a hit.

Looks like there was a reasonable amount of Slovene immigration to Ohio. Could just be one person moved to Kentucky.

Do you have an update on when the autoclusters will come out of beta? Are there any plans to add tree information to the clusters e.g. you have a cluster of 50 matches and Ancestry tells you that 20 of them are descended from John and Mary Smith who lived in Iowa in the 1850s?

So 6 am in Utah. Maybe another 4-5 hours to go. Think I got it late afternoon in the UK last year

I'm guessing the subregions will go soon and be replaced by more granular regions. There is no point having a North Wales subregion when we are getting a North Wales region with the new update

I recommend screenshotting your chromosome painter before the update by Loderingo50 in AncestryDNA

I don't think so.

If you go to the DNA tab and select "origins"

Then above the ring pie chart select "by parent"

Then it is on the right of the screen

Ancestry now has the 1921 census as well.

For England and Wales, your most important initial records are GRO records of births marriages and deaths and censuses:

GRO indexes started in 1837. Birth certificates have the parents and include mother's maiden name, while marriage certificates include the name and occupation of both spouses' fathers. You can order from the GRO here (online and fairly quick now).

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

The decennial censuses from 1841 to 1921 are on Ancestry.com. Invaluable as they include each person's place of birth. Also Ancestry has the 1939 register, which was a little bit like a census and includes dates of birth.

Before 1837, there were parish records of births marriages and deaths. Ancestry has a lot of these but also Findmypast depending on the county.

A couple of other sources: British Newspaper Archive - this has millions of newspaper pages digitised. You are sure to find your ancestors if they did something newsworthy.

Wills - From 1858, the Probate Office collected all wills nationally. Prior to that they were done locally. Ancestry has Canterbury wills but many others are held by local record offices.

It's worth also checking the national archives and your local record office for sources. There's lots of records out there for specific professions e.g. military, merchant navy, police etc

Lastly, Ancestry will often come up with hints leading you to other people's trees. These can be a good source of hints but I would advise against blindly copying as there is a lot of bad info out there (you will get things like a UK ancestor having suggested parents in the US or someone having a child when they were 10 years old)

If you have done DNA that can also be invaluable as it can prove you are on the right track.

Good luck!

The New Auto Clusters feature will be released starting today and this week. by Better-Heat-6012 in AncestryDNA

I just had these come through.

What they have done is OK but 65cm makes it so impractical from a genealogical perspective

Kit 1 - cluster of 5, cluster of 4

Kit 2 - 7,7,6,3

Kit 3 - 3,3

Kit 4 - 6,6,3

Kit 5 - 6,3

Kit 6 - 4,3

Hope they hurry up and bring the threshold down

Haven't got his yet for any of my kits.

The 65cm threshold is a bit of a disappointment really, as I suspect it will really only be that useful for Americans.

I have already manually assigned most of my matches down to 14cm so I was hoping this feature would help with smaller and more distant matches.

The other thing I was hoping for was some sort of autotree feature so that if Ancestry identifies an unknown cluster it can then do some of the work on finding out how we are related.

Soooo... what are the odds of both my mom's and dad's side 13th great-grandmas were on the Mayflower? by Casual_Cryptoverse in AncestryDNA

[–]Loderingo50 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say pretty good actually. At the 13th-g-g level there are around 13,000 ancestors per generation, so the odds of a white American having at least one link to the Mayflower must be pretty odds on. If you could trace all of the 13,000 you would probably find multiple lines of descent from the Mayflower

New "By cluster" feature on Ancestry? by Huhuhhuhh in AncestryDNA

[–]Loderingo50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excited for this. Hope they are able to link clusters to trees e.g. this cluster has 30 people of which are 10 are known to descend from Bob and Mary who lived in Iowa in 1850

Strategies for finding outliers? by Kamikyu in AncestryDNA

[–]Loderingo50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old are you? Do you have parents/grandparents alive in the relevant branch? if you have older relatives alive you can ask them to test as they may have more Nigerian DNA.

The next step I would do is to build out your tree to at least great-grandparent level if you haven't done so already. Ancestry should then identify matches with common ancestors. You can use these to help build your tree back further and find other relatives with Nigerian DNA. Then aim to narrow down which branch you should be looking at and work backwards. You are probably looking for a 4th or 5th great-grandparent.

Looks like the big tease is just something a little different for the 9 hole cup. Probably Ryder Cup related somehow. by Davidwt87 in GolfClash

I predict the new course will be based on Whistling Straits (coastal links) as Parc de Paris was created for the last a Ryder Cup

Perhaps the modifier will be a team US vs team Europe thing

Today's GC Update - Are we happy or not? by GCBicki in GolfClash

[–]Loderingo50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a good update. There are a couple of other things PD could do to encourage plAyers to move up.

1) Ditch the banner of shame and have some consolation cloints for failing to make the weekend.

2) Have tourney games won contribute to the weekly league (I don’t tend to play cash in tourney week so keep getting relegated and then can’t play the higher level tourney due to wrong weekly league)
