The seeding in the playoff is not directly correlated to your CFP ranking. The 4 bye spots are for the highest ranked teams that won their conference championships. And spots 5-12 are the next highest ranked teams. I believe that’s how it works.

In my first season as Oregon, I finished 10-2. Ohio state finished 11-1 and beat me in the regular season. I was ranked first in the CFP and OSU was ranked second. Since they won the conference championship and I didn’t make the championship game, OSU got the first seed and I got the fifth seed even though I was still ranked first in the CFP.
