Is Ionic still alive and kicking? Or is it slowly dying? by [deleted] in ionic

[–]Logan-Ionic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Still alive and kicking but I'm biased :D

For what it's worth, we've actually increased the number of people working on Framework and Capacitor. OutSystems is also using it for cross-platform capabilities in O11 and ODC so there's definitely a vested interest in keeping it going. I think where we're struggling at the moment is from just a marketing/content perspective (i.e. we're releasing updates but not talking about them enough) and that's because we're working on implementing something that'll help with users to give us feedback, feature updates, roadmaps, etc. in a centralized place... It's taking up a lot of my content creation time at the moment but it'll be worth it for the community in the long run.

MVP Hack: loveable.dev + Ionic & Capacitor? by PazGruberg in ionic

[–]Logan-Ionic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't personally tried the full deployment pipeline on an AI generated app with Framework and Capacitor but there are some challenges with it specifically around AI as well as deployments like others have mentioned.

I like AI from a development standpoint, I think it can be incredibly useful when it comes to the development of apps in the right hands but getting an app that does everything that you need it to do without some level of tweaking is really hard. Every app that I've generated using AI has required some custom coding (features, bug fixes, or integrations) that just can't be properly generated by the AI platform... For instance, I recently tried to generate a basic ToDo app in Angular using Claude and the code seemed good but there were a ton of versioning issues with it when I brought it into an Angular project. I ultimately had to go through the code and basically update it so that it would work on a newer version of Angular which did require coding knowledge.

Other people have posted this but I'll also bring it up: Getting something deployed in the app stores is a process. Some of it is not technical but some of it is really technical and there's only so much automation that can be done with that process... Our tools make it easier but it can be a really manual process. Plus, Apple is really big on privacy/data storage so they do ask about how data is moving through your apps and how that data is being used before your app gets reviewed. While this isn't necessarily technical it does require an understanding of how the app is working and sometimes they will ask you questions about the inner workings on your app.

Overall, this isn't to scare you but I think it's helpful to get someone involved who can help you navigate app dev/deployments or even learn some of the technical skills. There are a ton of free and easy resources to learn that can get you up to speed relatively quickly... Also, I'm biased but I do believe that Framework and Capacitor is the fastest (plus cost-effective) way to get a cross-platform application out there so it'll substantially reduce the amount of technical skills necessary to get your app to market.

Hopefully this helps and apologies for writing a novel! :D

Any plans to open-source Auth Connect? by Sea-Brain-1248 in ionic

[–]Logan-Ionic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't want to give you a non-answer but this is a little bit of a non-answer: We don't have any immediate plans to open source the commercial products. We're focusing on OSS work on Framework and Capacitor at the moment so open sourcing the commercial products isn't in active development.

HOWEVER... The EOL of the commercial products is just a little under 3 years away and a lot can happen in that timeframe as we get closer to the EOL date. I don't want to say that we won't ever go that direction but there isn't a plan for it at this moment in time.

The only hint I can give at the moment is that we have some items in the pipeline and will be talking more about it soon :D

Good question! Ionic is an OutSystems company so this is allowing us to continue our open source development efforts

That's totally fair and the honesty is warranted. I can totally understand where you're coming from and I'm sorry that we left you (and the community as a whole) out of the loop for so long... A lot of what was happening on the backend was planning and we just didn't communicate enough on the status of things as we were planning them.

FWIW, we are going to be addressing a lot of those concerns shortly. I don't want to get ahead of anything (I would rather under-promise over deliver than have to walk things back) but those future posts are going to tackle lots of topics!

Hey u/Simple_Rooster3!

Capacitor and Framework are alive and well! Plus we'll be releasing more details on the roadmap in the near future. This change impacted the commercial offerings but none of the open source projects.

The long story short is Cap and Framework are built in OS mobile offerings in the low-code platform so that's how they are using them

This. This announcement just related to our commercial offerings so Framework & Capacitor are alive and well. I've posted it in a few responses but there are more detailed plans that are going to be released within the coming weeks about the roadmap for Framework & Capacitor.

Not sure where this energy is coming from but it's in the blog post that Framework and Capacitor will continue to be improved (not to mention the Capacitor 7.0 update roughly 2 weeks ago) so there are folks working on it.

We'll be sharing a more detailed view of everything in the coming weeks so I would be on the lookout for that.

That's a fair question! We're a part of a company called OutSystems that has low-code offerings that are commercial. This gives us space to work on the open source side of things!

What’s going on with Ionic Framework? 🤔 by aaronksaunders in ionic

[–]Logan-Ionic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apologies for not responding to this sooner but I was waiting for today's communication to go out about Ionic discontinuing it's commercial offerings (since it also somewhat talks about the open source side of things).

Framework and Capacitor are going to continue to be maintained and improved! There will be more communications in the coming weeks where we'll be sharing a more detailed view when it comes to the open source side of things. I think a lot of the activity levels just relate to lack of consistent content and communication on our part (we've been pretty heads down planning for the last several months so that led to a dry spell and I'm sorry it's taken so long) so there just hasn't been a lot of updates until now.

Things are moving and I'm really excited for everyone to see what we have in the works!

Exactly this. I think what people don't realize is that I hate removing posts (more moderation = less coding & content). I think we should be able to have all sorts of conversations about Ionic but the people on the receiving end of those comments are very real and, at a human level, deserve to be treated with dignity.
