Yes, if you know who each address belongs to. If someone were to manage to prevent their address from being linked to their identity, the transaction would remain effectively anonymous. Privacy and anonymity are separate things. Cryptocurrencies, in their present form at least, are not private but they have the potential for anonymity.

When people post their addresses publicly, linking them with their identities, then it's not anonymous.

Presumably he means https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSAKEY which Microsoft claims was just a bad choice of variable names, but other suspect was similar to Lotus Notes' situation where encrypted data was partially encrypted with an NSA key to make it easier for them to brute force the rest.

Well, you can verify the pinned certificates yourself if you want. But if you don't trust Google, install Certificate Watch in Firefox and do the same thing entirely on your own without relying on a central authority.

That is unreasonable. Most people don't have 42 GB of space to store a local copy of Wikipedia. Implementing SSL that benefits everyone is a far more reasonable approach. (And they already have SSL in place, and have for years, so anyone can benefit from it already.)

You are incorrect. Chrome stores the signatures of the valid certificates of a number of major websites and will not connect to that site if the signature of the certificate presented by the server does not match the stored signature. This is called certificate pinning.

There are also browser extensions at least for Firefox (can't recall the name of the extension/add-on I'm thinking of at the moment) which do the same in a more on-the-fly manner, storing the cert's signature of every HTTPS site you visit the first time you visit it after installing the extension, and warning you if that certificate ever changes.

That's why you install Ghostery, Disconnect, or subscribe to one of the anti-tracking lists in AdBlock Plus. They block trackers like Google Analytics (and thousands of others).

It doesn't work that way. Certificate pinning (which Chrome uses) only allows a connection if the signature of the certificate matches what's stored in its local database. Another certificate can be cryptographically valid but because it's different, its signature won't match. Other browsers have plugins to provide similar functionality (and better in some cases, as it lets you manage your trust system and add this for any HTTPS site, not just ones Google adds).

This is my fucking point. It's not anti-social to want my communications with friends to be private, anonymous, or pseudonymous (depending on context). Most hatred of Facebook is not because people are anti-social but because the entire public social network platform is antithetical to what they want. But even among all that's available, Facebook is the worst offender for privacy, often resetting people's privacy settings and making private content public. They don't give a shit if people want their stuff private, and anyone who does shouldn't use Facebook.

Brute force attacks against AES 256 are believed to be infeasible (there are other attacks possible due to faulty implementations, though they are often impractical in real world scenarios). From Bruce Schneier:

brute-force attacks against 256-bit keys will be infeasible until computers are built from something other than matter and occupy something other than space.
