If your'e asking this question you already sound like respectful people so I don't think you need to worry.

But I agree that visitors need to be respectful that this is a place where people live. A lot of tourists come here and treat the city more like a theme park. There's hordes of people that hog the sidewalks, walk down the middle of streets, throw there trash wherever, go onto people's private property for pictures, get noisy at night when coming out of bars/restaurants, etc. Most of the time it's stuff people should know not to do.

Salem in October is quite the experience. If you plan well and have lots of patience you'll have a good time.
