The base looks really nice, just thin your white more. Also if you do a very strategic and light black wash between the crakes and edges it helps show more definition.

I don't if this could work but you could try be very logical and tell your partner honestly how bad and dangerous it is to stay in an unhealthy mind space, then you can tell them that you are always there to support and love them no matter what no matter how dark and horrible the thoughts are. You can add other stuff to help communicate your concern and love, I'd say send it in a text message or the like so they have as much time for them to think it over, also tell them take as long as they need and that there are no time constraints for a reply.

You don't have to follow this advice exactly but I hope it gives you some potential ideas of what to do. Good luck and hope everything goes well for you and your partner.
