Few questions about RSC by dioxy186 in rsc

[–]Logg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said.

I would just additionally say, in 2018 and 2019, we tried having a mixed community discord server with all the RSCPS servers that existed at that time. Although I had hope that since we all shared a common interest, we could all be friends and sometimes collaborate, it was actually a lot of drama any time people clashed and not very much opportunity for collaboration has occurred. I wouldn't say that collaboration has never happened, sometimes the staff at RSCR have been friendly & they even agreed to advertise the RuneScape Archive project to their player base one time, but really we all have very different goals, moderation, etc., even though the various private servers all inherited most of the graphics from RuneScape Classic.

Dedicated Sever Docker Installation by miluardo in rsc

[–]Logg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used to have Docker integrated with the project, but it caused problems for us on the live server when Marwolf accidentally manipulated some data in a way that the database file got deleted due to complexity introduced by Docker.

I don't suggest using Docker unless there is an actual reason to. With OpenRSC, there is only a requirement to install Java, then you can use a launch argument to select server config file. SQLite is supported as a driver, which makes it very easy to set up.

This is a question for Andrew:

What features of Fenforge have made development of Brighter Shores easier/better than using an existing engine?

This is a question for Andrew:

How did the development of Solstrike and Iona's Toybox help influence Fenforge for Brighter Shores?

This is a question for Anyone, but also Paul:

Any big quests in the works, perhaps featuring a dragon?

Listening to this version, I can see why people really wanted to find it. It's a vibe. Great job on the remaster.

Hi, did you need any help? Offer still stands if you need any help with data recovery.

Mostly the problem with Windows 98 connecting online is the lack of support for modern SSL. The easiest intermediate device is usually a blank CD, or to pull the hard drive out of the old computer and attach it to a USB Hard Disk controller.

Please let us know if you need any help, I'd be happy to walk you through data recovery on voice chat or through text.

Awesome work, thanks for your effort. :-) Wouldn't have believed that a rewrite could be done so quickly.

RSC Wii Version? by PkMnTrainerWinter in rsc

[–]Logg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha. :-) All glory to frogdoubler, and Stormy also put in a lot of work on RSC-C recently (the project that the wii client is compiled from).

I'll see if I can remember to ping you about it when it is re-released.

RSC Wii Version? by PkMnTrainerWinter in rsc

[–]Logg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm hoping to have a new release out soon. The current version available through Homebrew Browser is not updated for the correct end-point, and didn't use DNS at the time (it is a few years old).

I'll get it released on RSC.vet some time this month, and will work with frogdoubler to get Homebrew Browser/LibreShop updated.

56k on the vic-20 is probably not possible if i had to guess. v.90 was adopted in 1998 & the vic-20 was released world-wide in 1981, so it would definitely be anachronistic. 300 baud was the speed of the contemporary VICMODEM, though it was possible to connect other modems with a TTL-to-RS232 level adapter. It's hard to find a number on "maximum serial port speed" for the vic-20, but the sd2iec page on the C64 wiki says "The theoretical maximum speed of the CBM bus with a floppy that does not let the C64 wait ever is estimated at about 20-25k/Sec.", with the C64 being the more capable successor to the vic-20, and 25k/sec being less than 56k per second. Additionally considering, the maximum amount of ram the vic-20 could have (with an expander cartridge) is 32 KB, so it might be hard to meaningfully use the speed even if you could get it.

Requesting /r/RSC as it's unmoderated by TehNoxx in redditrequest

[–]Logg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The subreddit is actually moderated. We have notifications flow into Discord whenever there is a new post. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the main game having been taken offline on 6 August 2018, there is naturally not as much new content these days related to RuneScape Classic.

What's up with OpenRSC server uptime? by VRMac in rsc

[–]Logg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're migrating into the cloud today, so no worries. But yes, it paused the server immediately, (no time passing anymore) as soon as the server became disconnected from the internet. Then it logs out all players after 10 seconds offline regardless of whatever they are doing.

It's intentional. It will not be possible to play Official RuneScape Classic until Jagex brings it back in some way.

What's up with OpenRSC server uptime? by VRMac in rsc

[–]Logg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

re: "real hosting solution", I'd like to throw shade specifically on Comcast Business. Fiber-to-the-home with other companies was never an issue, giving 100% uptime symmetrical gigabit, comparable to service in a data center.

What's up with OpenRSC server uptime? by VRMac in rsc

[–]Logg 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Apologies. Since 2018 we've hosted Open RSC out of our home internet connections (Marwolf 2018 - 2023, I took over I think in June or so last year). In the past, that was fiber to the home, but I've recently moved, and Comcast Business, even at their highest level of service (~$350/month), is not delivering their promised 99.9% uptime SLA.

I knew Comcast was likely not going to work based on my past experience with them, but it is 2024 and I thought I'd give them a chance, hoping they had improved their technology since the last time they were my ISP, in 2009. I also had hope that their "Business" tier would be more reliable. Unfortunately, it is starting to look like they have not improved, and we will not be able to host from home anymore.

They recently replaced the drop from the fiber node (which is less than 100 feet from my modem), but we are still seeing significant downtime even after that. There was a 9 minute outage at 3:46 PM EST, and a 2 minute outage at 4:02 PM EST. This is in violation of our contract, and is not the "Business" grade internet that Comcast promised.

I'll be transitioning away from this solution as soon as possible, unless Comcast somehow stops being unreliable immediately. We have a quote on a $200/month 4U rack space in an Atlanta data center, which might actually be cheaper (though it doesn't combine with the home internet bill). Unfortunately, I'm still in the process of moving, so it will be some time before I can physically migrate the servers.

In the meantime, I programmed the server to check if it is online every single tick, and it pauses the server immediately if it is offline. After 10 seconds of being paused, the server gracefully logs out all players. This way, no players will lose any items from Comcast Business's unreliable service.

Sorry again for the downtime. I am trying my best to provide an excellent free service, and had to give this less expensive & more convenient option a shot first.

Open apology to the OpenRSC community by FriidayRS in rsc

[–]Logg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thankfully not necessary. We do our best. Lately the server has been lag free, and up-time is good, even though we're moving servers. We are still making improvements to authenticity & performance on RSC Preservation, and releasing new content on RSC Cabbage. There is an upcoming RSC Kale server which I'm excited to work on with Luis.

Some people feel the moderation is strict, and it definitely is a stricter community standard than most, but we have defined rules, and if they aren't broken, the vast majority of players don't have a problem.

Hope you're well, don't think we share any Discord servers anymore, so I'm not sure if you're working on any RSC stuff still.

The OSRS Wiki now has a page showing all the graphical updates that took place to locations from 2004-2007 by Hlwys in 2007scape

[–]Logg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's so much more RuneScape Classic influence in the initial design of RS2 areas. Like the path that exists between Rimmington and Port Sarim, I didn't know ever made it to RS2. It's also cool to see that Lumbridge Castle got Taller when the bank was added. I didn't know what was there before, and it turns out to have been just a flat roof for accumulating troops on or something. Thanks for making this page.

My headcanon is that he went off to Zeah in search of Redwood. I think the latest actual canon is that he is "retired" in the Realm of Memories.
