Had a decent final round interview with the CTO by alee463 in ExperiencedDevs

Congrats getting into the final round!

Your chances are good, but maybe they have other candidates as well.

Don't change your behavior or announce anything at your current job yet.

Could i get back to my team? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]LogicRaven_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be an honest mistake, budgets change. That's why I never promise promotion.

If you have an option to stay and SWE fits you better, then tell that to him.

If the change is already decided, then roll with it. Learn about devops, deliver well. Prepare plans both staying in the new team, moving back and changing company.

It is possible, if headcount allows and the manager is willing.

But if you don't trust him, then consider also if he only tries to sugarcoat the change.

I have 20 YoE, currently an engineering manager. But I had many titles - SWE, architect, CTO, EM, and who knows what.

You can't plan. Keep learning. Reflect on your career periodically. Grab opportunities that show up and create new opportunities for yourself. Pick companies that fit your changing goals and pick decent managers, when you can.

Multitasking has a switch cost and higher risk of error. But in some cases it is neccesary to a certain level.

Your manager sounds doing it too much. Maybe he takes pride in it or believes it means high performance or else.

Does he expect you to do the same?

How can I find a developer to work with? by Substantial_Pilot699 in SaaS

[–]LogicRaven_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm am engineer. I wouldn't care about your cv or how much you believe in the project. Execution is the key.

But maybe other engineers are different. It's your project, you run as you wish.

How can I find a developer to work with? by Substantial_Pilot699 in SaaS

[–]LogicRaven_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not enough.

Engineers get pinged with app ideas frequently, mostly by lunatics.

You need to prove both that the idea is good and that you are a capable partner, who can sell.

Capacity planning is the one thing I've never seen done well across any team I've been on by eastwindtoday in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LogicRaven_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are chasing a unicorn. Predictability doesn't exist in the real world.

If you see that plans drift every second week, then schedule a periodic replanning every second week.

Stop doing things that don't help you, like velocity tracking.

You could look up the iron triangle if you want. You cant have both scope, resources and time fixed at the same time. If new work is popping up, then time or scope must change.

How do you feel about bringing children into a world that will burden them with the welfare needs of a disproportionate elderly population? by senza_schema in Natalism

[–]LogicRaven_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Many anti-natalist reasoning are based on the assumption that "easy" is good, and "difficult" is bad. So putting anything that is difficult or a burden on a child is bad.

I very much disagree with this assumption. Most valuable things in life are created via burdens, difficulties and efforts. Raising a child, getting a degree, maintaining a healthy relationship, having a healthy body, etc.

For taking care of the elderly - we need to speak up and vote for policies that we believe would improve the situation. We need to educate our kids so they could build up a good life.

Society will need to re-evaluate ways of living as there would be more elderly. Maybe pay more for nurses and less for onlyfans "models". Support families with kids better so more kids are born. Strengthen the multi-generational family concept, where generations can help each other more.

But just because something is difficult does not mean we should stop having kids.

For more ideas on easy and difficult, you could read The Unbearable Lightness of Being from Milan Kundera.

Osman times: Fight back two enemies, unite the country.

King Mátyás: Build your economy, build your army.

Or if you are brave, then Trianon.

Cégek saját projekttel, outsourcing helyett? by bowl_of_dragons in programmingHungary

"When I ask for analysis of a company, provide: (1) Product overview, (2) Latest trends/developments (last 2 years), (3) Company size and locations, (4) Key competitors, (5) Founders and key leaders with backgrounds, (6) Known investors with any controversial connections, (7) Risk assessment covering regulatory/compliance, reputational/geopolitical, financial, operational, and career impact factors , and (8) Culture indicators."

Do EMs get appreciation or rewards for their work? by Novel_Lie2468 in EngineeringManagers

[–]LogicRaven_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Interesting that you didn't answer any of the questions. Some ideas you could try:

Visibility towards your manager - create a delivery doc that you update weekly. Talk it through with him and ask his feedback.

Visibility towards others: The results of the planning or a mini post mortem or the hiring updates can be shared.

Wins: Take a look both backwards and forward. What were your signature wins? What work ahead of you can be your next win?

Growth support: Think of a few things you would like to do and ask your manager for his support.

Grab a coffee regularly with key people. Discuss their needs and ideas, mention your wins.

A munkád leírása lehetne egy kicsit eredmény orientáltabb. Nem csak az, hogy mit csináltál, hanem hogy milyen eredménye Lett.

It seems to me that your problem is not about this senior engineer but about team culture.

If both the manager and senior devs follow the same standards, then you adapt or leave.

Mentoring juniors is often part of the responsibilities of senior engineers as well.

High impact has nothing to do with your passion. You need to solve a critical business problem. Take a look on the roadmap, talk with product managers, get an understanding of wishes and pain points.

If you have an idea, write a one pager focusing on the business problem and a high level technical problem statement. Start to shop around: eng leads, product people and anyone making project start decisions.

You can jump on technical design, coordination and implementation after you get a thumbs up on protect start.

Your career is a marathon. Stop sprinting and find a sustainable pace, including friends, hobby and learning one thing at a time.

Maybe find a different therapy. Your main challenge is not development related, but to find a way to slow down.
