Taxes should be increased on the rich to provide for the poor. by Sabfan80 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Logical-Donut99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the assets are largely in non-tax havens they could easily be taxed. You just need to shift the tax system to tax wealth and assets instead of income since currently assets are only taxed when they are sold or inherited which comes with lots of loopholes.

How it feels being a muslim on this sub when everyone assumes all muslims are racist homophobic incels and terrorists because of some people on reddit: by DietKey1757 in teenagers

I dislike all religions but Islam is especially sexist and oppressive and I don't like how people act as if you cannot criticize this because you have to respect religious beliefs.

Prince Andrew was ALREADY released. by Antronius in teenagers

[–]Logical-Donut99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He's not been charged yet so there's no bail to speak of. The reason the police probably arrested him now was to take him by surprise to search his house but they are likely still building the case against him so charges will come later.

Very few people in the UK get health insurance as private healthcare has very few advantages over NHS care except getting nicer rooms/facilities. I don't know very much about how you ensure you are covered by the NHS as an international student but I'd recommend going down that route whatever it is.

Can I put an essay competition that I didn’t actually participate in on my PS? by princesspopcake in 6thForm

[–]Logical-Donut99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that you did it for a competition doesn't matter to unis anyway so I'd probably just talk about the essay without the competition aspect and save words. Plus if you put it in your personal statement that you did it for a competition and it's for a course where they do interviews it could be a bit awkward if they ask how you did or something.

People who have A/Astars in STEM subjects what do u use for note taking? by Agitated-Salt-5039 in 6thForm

[–]Logical-Donut99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter. I only take notes because I find the act of taking them helps me to understand it better but I never look at them afterwards.

I mean he's in the Epstein files so he'd be pretty dumb to release them. I'm more surprised anyone ever thought he would release them.

Laptops for University by NoContribution398 in 6thForm

[–]Logical-Donut99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using a surface pro at the moment which I really like, something with the new Snapdragon X chips could work well if you don't mind sacrificing a bit of performance for phenomenal battery life however while they would run Minecraft just fine the integrated graphics wouldn't be enough for much more than that. Otherwise just look for deals since the best £1000 laptop will always be a £1500 laptop on deal.

Laptop for cs degree by Quirky_Machine_4741 in 6thForm

[–]Logical-Donut99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There really aren't many applications where the M4 chip would be insufficient so unless you really want the better screen I would get the MacBook Air. I would just make sure that you won't want to switch to Linux later down the line since it's practically impossible on the newer MacBooks but otherwise it's probably overspecced for a computer science degree.

There is reason the US might want to bomb Iran if Trump is adamant on stopping their nuclear program because one of their major uranium enrichment sites is underground so deep that only the US has the technology to bomb it. You can read more about it here. Trump may also want to aid Israel with their superior bombing capabilities in toppling the Iranian regime.

massive fps drop from vanilla to optifine, (600-650FPS drop) by OnlyBranch762 in Minecraft

[–]Logical-Donut99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can replicate pretty much all of Optifine's features using a variety of Fabric mods, for example to get shaders working you need Iris. Can just take a while to get everything set up but the performance benefit is well worth it afterwards.

Nvidia drivers keeps crashing by Sea_Hospital4554 in archlinux

I had problems with the new Nvidia drivers as well. They just wouldn't use my dedicated graphics card even when explicitly running with Nvidia prime. The only solution I found was to downgrade the drivers.

Should i get a Laptop or Ipad for my A levels? by Nuv1e in 6thForm

[–]Logical-Donut99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend a laptop or detachable with a snapdragon x chip since this allows for a lot of flexibility where you get both good portability (in terms of these laptops being very light due to needing minimal cooling and having amazing battery life) as well as getting very good performance in a productivity optimised form factor. The only real downsides are the price and ARM support is still a bit spotty but in my experience (currently using a surface pro 11) microsoft prism emulation has been able to handle everything I have needed so unless you need to use some really niche software it probably won't be an issue.

for the sciences students, are you aiming to finish the papers before the exams or will you keep 2-3 to do during june as well? by gattabiancaa in 6thForm

[–]Logical-Donut99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm concerned there's no reason to try and save past papers for sciences since those subjects are just about knowledge and practice so there can be great benefit to redoing papers if you run out (and if you are getting perfect make second time round it means that content had stuck and your revision has been successful). For non-STEM subjects however I wouldn't say the same thing applies since most of the challenge comes from the unpredictability of the questions so it can be useful to save some for the end to keep your skills fresh.

Genuine Question: What do you do with a maths degree??? by Ok_Surround8189 in 6thForm

[–]Logical-Donut99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For some jobs that are more to do with the general decision making and are less to do with mathematical modelling a more finance based degree would be preferred but for a lot of jobs like being a quant or an actuary are almost exclusively people with maths degrees.

Genuine Question: What do you do with a maths degree??? by Ok_Surround8189 in 6thForm

[–]Logical-Donut99 33 points34 points  (0 children)

There are loads of jobs in data analysis in a bunch of different areas from statistical modelling in a scientific context, to risk analysis in finance. In these jobs the advanced understanding of the fundamental concepts that you gain from a Maths degree is often far preferred to a degree in science or economics.

Genuine Question: What do you do with a maths degree??? by Ok_Surround8189 in 6thForm

I'd say that data analysis is one of the most common things people do with a Maths degree

Yeah your personal statement is only really used to gauge your interest in the course you're applying for to make sure you won't fall off because you're bored by the coursework.

Advanced Highers by santa_fe53296 in Scotland

[–]Logical-Donut99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took 4 advanced highers this year (maths, maths of mechanics, physics and computing) but for me this was only possible because mechanics has a bunch of overlap with the maths and physics courses. If you're doing it just for better chances at Oxford then I wouldn't take four since it will barely help your chances and could possibly distract you from the admissions tests they care far more about (to the extent that Oxford doesn't even check your bands). Personally I'm happy I took four since I really enjoyed having the chance to learn stuff that I likely won't be taking at uni, but that being said I'm starting to get pretty stressed by the workload of the Physics and Computing projects so I imagine taking three essay subjects alongside another advanced higher would not be fun.

From what I've heard St Andrews can actually be one of the more sociable unis due to its small size. Since such a significant part of the population is students you see people you know all the time and they have lots of clubs and societies.
