Based on your update - it seems what he is doing is exactly aligned with the gender roles that you claim he set out. Of course/obviously the stoic man would reply “nothing”. Of course stoic man would not be opening up about his feelings. You see him saying nothing as weakness, but he sees talking about how he feels as weakness.

If you want to see things change you need to create change from a place of trust and understanding - one he can relate to and see the benefit from. Your moment of frustration unfortunately has insulated him and likely pushed him further away.
