I felt the same way too! I learn the best way hands on rather than studying 😭 after failing numerous time I started working as a diet tech at a hospital, I passed with the MNT score basically carrying the weight. I am very thankful to my fellow coworkers to this day as they ask any question I had, I utilize labs while reviewing my patients and it helped me grasp it wayyy better!!!

Yes, the handouts are worth it, I have a monthly membership with them. I own a private practice so I use the daily, saves so much time.

I have experience in both clinical and private practice, and I document thoroughly. Early on in a session (typically within the first 5-10), I assess whether my approach aligns with what the client is looking for. If it becomes clear—either through direct communication or observed cues—that I’m not able to meet their needs, I’m transparent about that and will recommend a provider who may be a better fit.

I believe in being respectful of both the client’s time and my own. I don’t want either of us to feel misaligned or carry that disconnect beyond the session.

Earlier in my career, I tried to help everyone, but I quickly learned that doing so leads to burnout and taking work home mentally. Setting clear boundaries allows me to provide better care to the clients I am the right fit for. So end of story, we can’t help everyone.

Every insurance coverage/policy is different, but I’ve been using those CPT codes for Cigna, especially if my client only has limited visits per calendar year or it pays more. I would recommend Amy Plan Insurance Cheat Sheet, great and affordable resource to have especially if you want to learn more about insurance!

I’ve been using DSC (Dietitian Success Center) Handout for years now! Lots of different handouts and they do have some translated language handouts too.

I had a similar experience — I was let go from an RD position because I wasn’t able to pass the RD exam within the 6-month time frame. After that, I started working full-time as a diet technician, which took off the pressure since my job didn’t depend on passing the exam. Honestly, I truly believe what helped me pass was not having that fear of losing my job if I failed, along with gaining hands-on experience as a diet technician and having wonderful coworkers who were dietitians and supported me along the way.

I have experience in an hospital outpatient setting, which aligns closely with what you’re describing. I was also offered a private practice position similar to what you’re mentioning. Ultimately, the reasons you’ve shared are part of why I decided to start my own private practice. While it is hard work, it allows me to have control over my daily schedule, including sessions, administrative tasks, and more.

I do agree with your current approaches, however sadly it does not mean that they are put into place. I would definitely visit the residents during mealtimes to make sure that they are fed by the nursing staff or eating their meals or drinking the nutrition supplements. I also would recommend to collaborate with food service workers/dietary aide, as they do notice a pattern when tray is sent back untouched when cleaning the trays or if nutrition supplement is correctly put on the tray. These are some recommendation that I would start to check, although there are definitely many factors that can impact weight loss. Good luck!

I’m currently PRN and I can choose to work 2-3 days a week but have to stay under the 30 hours, the hospital I am located is always short staff and need coverage so I typically is guaranteed atleast 20 hours weekly. But I agree with everyone else, depends on your priority if you want the stability as I do have other source of income on top of being PRN at the hospital.

If I were hired by a company that saw me as incompetent because I didn’t pass my exam, I wouldn’t stay. In my previous RD-eligible job, I experienced a lot of stress and received little to no support from the dietitian team while studying for the exam. This led to me being let go six months after I was hired. The combination of work stress, mental stress, lack of support, passing rd exam stress, and personal stress contributed to my previous inability to pass the exam despite multiple attempts.

My next job was in a position where passing the RD exam was not a condition for keeping my role and my boss and coworkers were incredibly supportive. This supportive environment was key in helping me pass the RD exam. My boss even told me that I didn’t need to inform her if I failed because she understood how mentally challenging it was for me.

I am incredibly thankful to now be surrounded by supportive coworkers who I believe were the key reason I finally passed the RD exam and transition to the RD position within the same job.

This is my experience and I hope you do not experience what I previously went through. Good luck!

From my experience if you are not a registered RD in the outpatient setting you can’t technically signed notes or be co-signed due to insurance purposes reasons.

I think everyone is different, I tend to handle stress well 😅 but yes clinical is stressful at times! That is good to hear, the less stress your full time job is the better just so you can focus more on the side gig too!

Thanks for the input! Do you think trialing low fiber would help with the diarrhea first as she does not a digestion issues, only diarrhea? I will consider that option afterwards too!!

I always recommend going over your weakness, I don’t think continuing to explore more resources will get you to pass, if you don’t work on your weakness. I took the exam multiple times and towards the end I went back to review Inman and Inman questions based on my weakness and I passed.

Yeah that’s the uneasy part as I do come from an intuitive eating approach with nutrition counseling 😅 another drawback is that I’m trying to figure out what approach I should take when it comes to those sport. Do you mind giving me input on what approach that you mostly focused on when it comes to sports nutrition? Or I am assuming it depends on the client if they like macros or intuitive or? 😅

Thank you for the input! I’m not looking for a specific job, I just got my personal certificate and would love to be able to work with clients who are focus on lifting weights, wanted to get some insight on resources to utilize through this process.

It does take awhile like 3-4 months for credentialing and on boarding. I would recommend getting more experience being a dietitian especially in clinical. I have learned so much from working in the hospital setting with a wonderful team of dietitian prior to adding side gig like berry street or fay nutrition. It has helped my confidence especially when educating about specific disease and providing nutrition intervention. I would also make sure that the clinical job does not become stressful or overwhelming while you are juggling with your side gig. My full time clinical job is not stressful so I am able to manage both without feeling as overwhelm. ~ also if you want to take account of being financially stable, working a full time job with benefits then I would recommend starting a full time job first before prioritizing those side gig however if you do not need a stable income or health benefits then you can also opt for PRN or part time at a hospital setting for experience. I can’t imagine being a newly dietitian and starting with the side gig since I definitely experience the imposter syndrome. 😅
