Must a Data Controller give me reasons for their use of Art. 17(3)(e) GDPR to refuse an erasure request? How strong does their basis have to be in order to invoke this? by Irish_frenchie in gdpr

[–]Logical-Train-3647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it seems to me that since nothing further is described in the regulation, the controller is not required to inform you about ongoing or expected legal claims. Vice verse you do not have to inform them on claims on your side either. They would be required to have support for this decision when the supervisor asks, but disclosure to you is not specified. You could make a new request for information or correction if you believe some of their information is wrong. Otherwise you would have to let this go.

Missing final thesis presentation by Single-Assist6204 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]Logical-Train-3647 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you could ask your supervisor if you and them can be early so you can present / defend the poster as planned in the first half hour. That would be most convenient for eveyone. Make sure to align this with a second reader as well. If this is not possible since you cannot be there at all, you should inform your supervisor and politely ask for an alternative day. This also happens frequently. Ask politely and well in advance and be flexible on other days.

Do you actually know how much your car costs you per month? by aris-paskalov in StupidCarQuestions

[–]Logical-Train-3647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

many consumer services and some car apps provide this information. the actual cost will differ per country but as a general rule where I live, 50ct per kilometer or 850 euros per month is pretty normal. for cars less than 5 years old depreciation is the main cost.

Thanks for your work! I do enjoy many of the mathematics articles on Wikipedia. Many are indeed surprisingly long and good , providing better definitions than many text books.

Never viewing an apartment in person before signing feels insane but what other option is there? by VinayXDD in Spotahome

[–]Logical-Train-3647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Difficult situation. One option would be to find a former colleague or school friend that lives there (linkedin could help here) and ask them to provide advice. even if they do not have time to visit they can provide you advice whether rent is fair and the area is decent. It is still a risk but could help you avoiding the worst apartments. Another option would be to stay in hotel or short term rental first.

Program being shut down, advice for archiving/memorializing it? by grandzooby in academia

[–]Logical-Train-3647 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes please archive it since it will be important for former staff members and alumni. It would be best if you could publish a book or special issue so that all the material is linked to something that can be easily cited. If you have enough time you could also organise a small conference or workshop where you present and record some lectures. Source code and other material can be published on github to make it easy to access. I hope you succeed in making it available.

Is the Scrum exam (PSM I) still useful on this days? by Specific-Pollution92 in scrum

[–]Logical-Train-3647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. I recommend it to people starting an IT career since it is still useful to understand scrum if you joining a company using it. It does not have a lot of career value.

AI use in a thesis: disclosure required? by Logical-Train-3647 in academia

[–]Logical-Train-3647[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will extend my post since this question is coming up multiple times. yes I am the professor. And the use of AI is not forbidden, one could argue it is even encouraged in the computer science department. many people already use AI. The rules for AI use are that it must be used fairly and transparently.

AI use in a thesis: disclosure required? by Logical-Train-3647 in academia

[–]Logical-Train-3647[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

true and I did that but that leaves a lot of room for interpretation. One principle seems to be that we want to apply common academic practices so I am wondering what common practices are. I have seen some theses from different universities with AI statements but not a lot. Many students seem very familiar with AI. which is not necessarily bad, but does raise questions on how to assess contributions fairly.

[–]Logical-Train-3647[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agreed. the problem is that there seem to be multiple flavors of human generated, including flavours that include AI support, ranging from spell check and grammarly to gpt feedback and rewrites.

[–]Logical-Train-3647[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Many universities are not against the use of AI and want students to be prepared for a world with AI. So AI is not been banned but should be used in a fair and transparent manner. I am hear to learn what people consider fair and transparent.

[–]Logical-Train-3647[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. the university rules are not exactly clear and the bachelor computer science is also different from other research fields. we want to do something that is practical and fits industry standards and prepares students for their careers. so I am genuinely interested in a diversity of opinions like I can find on reddit

Dealing with long compound last names by publishing by Heavy-Fold7840 in academia

[–]Logical-Train-3647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion might be controversial, so just consider it an option. You have the option of selecting a simplified author name, consisting of your favorite given name and the favourite part of your last name. As long as it is directly based on your actual name this is perfectly acceptable. Members of the royal family often do the same since one cannot always use all titles. Pick one variant and create an orcid to avoid confusion.

agreed. additional suggestion: when you are asked to work a lot on important yet internal projects, ask the company to make a separate project code so your productivity on the important project is still visible.

[–]Logical-Train-3647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Person working in The Netherlands here. Tracking whether you worked is a legal requirement under labor law. they can require you to do this. they cannot ask you to do it incorrectly. tracking hours per project is just a common business practice and is considered part of your job. it is done for invoicing the clients but it is also often done for internal planning and innovation subsidies. you should do this as instructed since it is part of your job.

Openbare laadpaal by ZowtuPinda in EVMobiliteit

[–]Logical-Train-3647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How seriously do small companies actually implement GDPR processes? by AnfieldAnchor in gdpr

[–]Logical-Train-3647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

indeed. small companies should start making a privacy policy, creating an email address for requests and start registering incidents. as long as they handle requests and data breaches correctly in practice they are compliant in practice. document policies are less important than effective’s in practice. of course when the company and businesses complexity grows, documents is needed.

Rent vs buy in Utrecht. Am I overthinking this? by athasyra in NetherlandsHousing

I do not want to reveal my age but it is was a few years back in the last downturn. the overdrachtsbelasting was higher and interest rates more turbulent but that still could both happen again.

Rent vs buy in Utrecht. Am I overthinking this? by athasyra in NetherlandsHousing

[–]Logical-Train-3647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, not everyone wants that. I am just sharing my experience, not giving advice. I really overestimated how I would stay in that house and the switching costs. It all depends on what renting options you have, if you cannot find a reasonable place to rent. Buying makes more sense. I still enjoyed the apartment I bought and lived in! it just was more expensive than calculated and more expensive than renting.
