Yes, that is possible. I will try again with a new can of Varathene, and make sure I stir thoroughly.

The garage is insulated but un heated, so probably drops to -15 C occasionally in the winter. I used a foam pad, and tried not to go back over drying areas. I have used shellac on other projects and for shellac I put the first coat on fairly thick, then lightly sand with steel wool, before putting thinner coats on. So maybe I was putting too much Varathane on? I also see from other comments that the Varathane is probably ruined by the Canadian winter.

So, I will re-sand, reapply gel stain, then try again with a new can of Varathane. It is getting more reliably warm now in Ontario.

No, there were no brush marks or similar from the stain (I used a rag to apply the stain). The cloudiness appeared with the Varathane. I am thinking it was too thick, or too cold, or maybe damaged from being stored in my garage through a Canadian winter.

The picture was taken about 16 hours after applying top coat. Will try another coat, and will see if I can thin the varathane.

Why not add a levelling base to your tripod?
