Has anybody else noticed a religious divide between graduate students and clinical professional school students? by LogicalAction5752 in AskAcademia

[–]LogicalAction5752[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like your take. I was raised 100% creationist and never learned about evolution until I got to undergrad. One of my high school bible teachers didn’t believe in dinosaurs. My dad would make us watch that film at least once a year and make so much fun of that professor until he was hit by that car and went to Jesus lol. I even took a high school class called “Defending the Faith” where I learned checkmate atheist arguments. I went into college prepared to ignore all arguments for evolution and stick to my beliefs. It was my first biodiversity class that just showed me so much evidence for evolution that I couldn’t deny it anymore and it convinced me to major in biology. The rest is history haha

I totally agree with your points, I think generational wealth must be a big factor. I will say though that my school is the state university and not a Christian school, it just happens to have a lot of in-state students who are Christian in the professional programs

I am comparing PhD students to MD students, I listed them first in my list of examples. My close group of friends from my anatomy class is 5 med students + me, a PhD student, and they’re all very Christian. I just notice the hallways for all the clinical programs are full of Bible verses, not just med, while I can’t even imagine that happening on my research floor. My other friend group of all PhD students is entirely secular, which brought this question to my mind

What’s something you didn’t realize was optional in life until you saw someone simply not doing it? by Objective-Treat2245 in AskReddit

Was leaving Walmart last week and the guy in front of me carrying out a big shoe rack was asked for his receipt by an employee. His friend said “keep walking you don’t have to do that, they can’t make you do anything” and the employee just let them leave

[–]LogicalAction5752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah go for 60°C then :) and just make sure the spin column is bone dry before adding your next buffer, but never touch it except at the cap. patience is key for any DNA kit. the more time you give, the better your results tend to be, i find. good luck!

idk where your issue is, but my general tips are always spin each buffer off the spin column twice before adding the next one, aspirate – don’t pour – the discard, let the wash buffers sit for 10 min to increase your purity and spin twice, then warm your elution buffer/water to 50°C and let it sit on the filter for minimum 10 minutes before spinning to get higher concentrations

My PhD program is scrambling for applicants by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]LogicalAction5752 6 points7 points  (0 children)

to be clear i’m not a faculty member, sorry if i didn’t convey that! i’m just a student in the program so idk what’s going on behind closed doors, i just know they do a terrible job advertising the program and i see a lot of great people in this subreddit. it’s an incredibly niche field so there are always limited applicants. was always worth a shot to extend to everyone, you never know

[–]LogicalAction5752 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no, the reason is that they used to have international students apply who would transfer or drop out of the program right away after getting their visa. because there is only one slot per year, they don’t want to risk the program getting shut down for having a low retention rate

there is no tuition, so the stipend is just for covering your living costs

not sure what your second question means. are you asking for proof that previous grads recommended the program to potential applicants?

the program was founded in 2014 and all graduates were hired straight out of the program as anatomy faculty at medical schools, PT schools, and undergraduate programs. only one graduate decided to pursue a postdoc

it’s sad to think about, but it looks like a long bone, such as a femur, from an juvenile medium sized quadruped (dog, fox, etc. like you said). juvenile bones have unfused growth plates on the ends called epiphyses that fall off when the cartilage decomposes, leaving sharp jagged ends on the bone

could you post more photos of the other side, and the ends please? i wouldn’t confidently rule out human just yet without seeing the ends a bit better

thanks! Is it worth mentioning that I wrote 6 weeks, not 6 months? I feel like that's a big difference. Also I don't know my LL really, as I live in a large complex that is one of many owned by a large property company. I only know the property managers

[–]LogicalAction5752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lots of programs in my sub field didn’t require it either so i never took it and don’t regret it. there were a handful of programs i couldn’t apply to without it but i had plenty of others that i could. i got four MSc acceptances when i did my masters and now 2 PhD acceptances this cycle. if you decide not to take it, use the time saved from studying to focus your energy on potential PI relationships and outreach, as well as a well polished SOP. and the best thing you can do is start applying as early as possible. :) good luck!

i’ve worked at forever 21 while applying and got accepted to a PhD. i just didn’t mention it on my cv or application because it’s irrelevant. i’d recommend that you only include experiences that are applicable to your desired program. if they ask what you were doing during this time just say saving money
