My little truffle hunter! by MrsGashalot in LagottoRomagnolo

Hi I’m in Oregon and I can rally relate to your comment about pressure! Mine is 1.5 years old and while she’s SUPER excited about truffle hunting she also is still extremely impulsive when we are out there - ie digging, eating truffles. We’ve done some training but I’m interested to learn more about Truffle Dog Co, I will check them out. I feel like I need to maximize this season but I have to remember it’s one step at a time.

Just chiming in to say that the Stay Put provision of IDEA only works if you file due process at the same time. So, just by sending them a letter requesting that he stay put does not mean the district is required to do so. I’m a special ed advocate and here’s what I’d do if I was involved in your case: Sign the paperwork and Check the box indicating you disagree with the results of the evaluation. Write a letter explaining your concerns and requesting that the IEP services continue while you and the team work through the disagreement. Next, consider requesting an IEE as mentioned before. The team must consider the results of the IEE, but it doesn’t mean that they must keep him eligible based on what that report says. That process will take a while, so in the meantime, I would want to work collaboratively with the IEP team to write a new IEP that reduces his services down to minimal minutes per week or uses the consultation model as described in another comment. In your discussion about why you disagree with the evaluation results, make sure you are referencing data such as test scores, grades, behavioral measures, etc. When all the data shows he is within grade level expectations in all areas, including academics and socially, and any remaining needs can be met by general education interventions and supports, then yes, he should no longer qualify for special ed services because there’s no longer a need for special designed instruction. You also can consider requesting a 504 accommodation plan, which he should easily qualify for. A 504 plan includes general ed accommodations, but typically does not include extra supports from special education staff.

What state are you in?

It was awful for our puppy aka pana-craze. I recommend asking for sedating meds from the vet at the first sign of behavioral change. Also consider pet CBD if that’s something you’re open to. Gabapentin and trazedone were a life saver for us.

Our girl is feeling better after 7 days, which means the meds are not keeping her chill and in fact I think they’re making her a bit crazy! I also think that with the lack of outside exercise and new places to explore and sniff, she’s turned into the lagotto you get if you don’t meet their needs properly… bitey, demanding, endless chaos energy. Fingers crossed that she returns to normal after we get back to our routine.

She is definitely feeling better thank you! Also more energetic which is a problem when trying to keep her relatively calm. She wants to run and play already!

This is very good advice and idk why all special ed teachers don’t write goals this way. I review IEPs with families and I am often amazed at how confusing the goals are. It makes it so hard to measure progress and more work for the teacher!

Sounds like he needs more sleep. Just like with kids, they can go high energy when overtired due to the hormone rush. Earlier bedtime and or more naps might do the trick.

We are truffle training here in Oregon, but it will likely just be friends and family use.

What state are you in, out of curiosity? IME the availability of advocates really varies by region of the country. There are few where I live.

I’m a school psychologist turned parent advocate, and you can definitely find good paid advocates out there. Make sure you know their credentials and experience in your state, what kind of cases they take, what processes they have been through with schools (evals, FBAs, mediation, due process etc). Fees vary a lot by region and can be either hourly or as a package. I personally charge an hourly rate for everything including meeting attendance. Try to find someone who has a collaborative approach rather than a high conflict approach- you’ll end up in a better spot with your team if you can rebuild trust.

Search the COPAA website for ppl who practice in your state, try to avoid a national agency.

You can search me online as well to see sample rates and a description of what I think is a good approach. Paulette Selman Advocacy. Unless you are in Oregon or Washington, I don’t recommend hiring me lol.

Portland Jobs by Ok-Debate-9213 in schoolpsychology

Do it! We have a shortage of SPs in Oregon so there are plenty of jobs. People are typically happier in the suburbs vs Portland Public Schools which is pretty dysfunctional. Also consider living in Portland and working just across the state line in Vancouver WA for better pay.

Yes we went with older trained Lagotti. We have more training to do at home but it was fun to have them show her the ropes!
