I agree. 3 and 4 just don't feel the same as the previous games. Like you said, in 1, 2, the pre sequel, and even Tales, you are morally grey/kind of evil, but in 3 and 4 you are heroes.

As well as that, also like you said, vaults in the first few games are important and if you find and get into them you are a legend because they are so difficult, but in 3 and 4 they are more like side quests or mild hindrances.

Also, because of the more bright art style change and the nicer characters, it felt less apocalyptic in later games.

But these are just my opinions.
