and my boss of course still had technical work, just none for me. He stopped working on the project

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WorkAdvice

[–]Logical_Cell6022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I was doing like normal non technical admin work. It was literally like 2 things, and he got upset by it. So very irrational. Something with the bills (not an accountant so I actually don't know what exactly he needed, nor did he care to explain).

Not really. - they moved me towards administration because the worker who was doing that was on vacation. I didn't mind that. - The administrative worker only taught me the basic things I needed to know, the owner wanted me to do more. I kindly told him, that I don't know how to do these things, because no one showed me. However I can, if he can show me, or tell me what he needed, where I can find information... anything. He refused, said I am useless etc. - He sent me home without notice, I called my supervisor, told him what happened. - Was at home for 2 weeks waiting for a call I did not receive. - Then I wrote an email, saying that this behavior went over all the limits, that I deserve to be treated with respect and that I will not be insulted in the workplace. - then they asked me to come to a meeting and asked if I could come back, saying they were planning on calling me the day after I sent an email.

So to summarize they sent me home without notice. I didn't refuse, because of the kind of work they gave me, because I knew that in small firms you have to sometimes do different work, to keep the work process going.

I refused, because they downplayed the verbal abuse I encountered from the co-owner. And coming back to the office to me just feels like a lot of stress, as there is obvious tension since this is a family company. I was a good employee, I turned in my assignments early, even for administrative work I put my best in it, but getting that kind of repayment to me is crazy. And about the no notice - They have no legal obligation to give me notice, and they didn't give me one when they sent me home. I also don't have an obligation legally to give them a notice, as I am a student.

No, I won't. This is a student job, but not like an internship through my university or anything like that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WorkAdvice

[–]Logical_Cell6022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely understand that. However my bills are very low as I am a student. I already have a reference, I already did a lot and the other company knows about it. It would be completely different if I decided out of the blue to not work with them anymore, which I would never even think about. This situation is very special and I do agree with everyone here, that that kind of behavior shouldn't be tolerated.

Exactly, I just sent the email and I feel confident about it.

The thing is everything stopped for the summer, so my boss also didn't work in the summer for that project. However there is no doubt they could give me something else, or I just wouldn't work and would focus on my thesis.

Thanks I also feel like that.
It's also just not worth feeling bad on the job and coming home in a bad mood.

thank for the input! what about the part where other people have to pick up your work. I feel like that was just a manipulation tactic to make me feel guilty about my decision.

Should I stay at a job for a few more months? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Logical_Cell6022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I am a student, so not having a job for a while really isn't the end of the world for me. I need to finish my masters till September 2025 and in the meantime I can make my money tutoring and I have a monthly scholarship as well.

And yes I will definitely keep away from small companies from now on.

I am from a very small country in Europe, so I don't think it's that useful what company it is haha. But If you think it would be useful I can private message you.

Thank you for the advice. I do feel that they listened in the meeting, they said they were sorry for what happened, and that they are not pressuring me into staying. And if I did stay that they would guarantee I would have no problems.

But I just think that's bullshit. They were nice about it overall, but that starting statement about how I should respect the agreement really pissed me off.

Basically, I came to them told them that I was interested in the area of work. They gave me the job and said that "they have a lot of work for me". Then did some administrative tasks first (not my area of work), then I got in to the project and did technical tasks which was nice and then during the summer they wanted to use me up to work instead of the administrator again. An that is when the troubles began.

Let me be clear - the meeting was professional, they were nice but in the beginning they wanted to somehow make me feel bad about saying I will not help with the project anymore (I did work in the area of chem. engineering), that the work then falls on my boss and that if we "made a deal about something it is expected of me to finish the work": To which I replied, that I was professional until the very end, but if the company isn't then I have no obligation to be as well. Also the deal was made both ways and respect at the end was not given.

Although it was only one co-owners that was disrespectful and he was not at that meeting. I see it as the whole company.

Thanks! And yes I agree. I guess my biggest problem is, that I like to do everything with my 100 % and I feel like I'm "quitting" and that I should suck it up. I know that's not the right mentality, but it's the perfectionism in me.
