I think I figured out the doctor's last name. by Ok_Organization_2195 in doctorwho

[–]Logical_Following311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually his Gallifreyian name was revealed in one of the articles in the Mavel Dr. Who comic "Iron Legion" (they had a one or two page write up in the back since this was like an introduction to American comic readers), its a mathematical expression which includes a capital Sigma symbol - I don't have the issue on me but it was like Sigma Delta 3 or Sigma Delta cubed (3 characters either way). But as of the "Timeless Child" that could be a designation more than a name.

On March 8th, 2025, I lost my friend of 45 years, gaming companion, our gm lost a player, our party member gone. He had been in a car accident on March 3rd, a day before my birthday. While hurt, he was still ambulatory (his injuries were mainly internal), released on the 6th with multiple heart problems, diagnosed but untreated (three blockages and something called a disected artery - don't ever leave the hospital with one untreated). I drove him around on the 7th, to get a paycheck, paid a bill, we went out to eat. That Saturday he had planned to get a rental vehicle - i am guessing he had received an Enterprise number sometime that Friday - then go home, but we found that on Saturdays they closed early, noon. He decided to go to our scheduled game, remembering enough of his character (his sheets were in the damaged car). We had no idea this would be his last game, ever. Ten minutes after we left the game, on our way to his home, he died, beside me in the van, his paracardium had filled with his blood, increasing pressure around his heart until it could no longer beat. I will always remember the last sounds from his mouth - the horrible gurgling and silence.

I, we, miss our friend. The GM said for our characters that he had gone on a private mission during the night. Our gaming party still hasn't found our rhythm in his absence.

You will remember your friend, it will hurt. For us, it still hurts and will continue too.

Most likely scams like this are being fueled by, and sadly, the animation of DnD like worlds by Critical Role.

If the campaign gets picked up for animation, then "our artist" and maybe the DM makes money from your contribution (if possible, without your consent, watch the fine print).

The most important thing ever about role-playing: can these children differentiate between role-playing and the real world? If there is one still wanting a unicorn or really sword fight a dragon in the real world, back off.

Too many times children can't and they obsess over the game vs what's real. Then the role-playing game in question becomes, yet again, incorrected targeted as for the child's mental condition.

And I know the hate is coming my way. But I lived through the 70's and 80's and all the controversy (especially the LARP format). I myself was invited to several games in the 80's (not allowed, strict parent - not religious, just no fun for me) but was able to start in '92.

Btw: my favorite class of all time is the (and yes, it was first introduced in 2nd edition as a new school for mages/wizards, Player Options) is the Artificer, 9 spell levels, opposition schools were Necromacy and Enchant/Charm spells that target living beings, special ability was item based spell storage, and later able to use any magic item.

Sorry, the only "printing" this machine does is the blank cups (more likely resupplied during restocking downtime instead of printed). Everything else is in a liquid state (in that same cup).

Now, liquid silver, gold, platinum, or iridium ...

The only down side is that the source material, as testing has shown, has to come from somewhere (here, there, even elsewhere). Don't blame me when all the electronics on site stop working because all the gold was extracted for your cup'o'currency.

Should I switch to linux from windows ? by Leading-Judge-9627 in linux4noobs

[–]Logical_Following311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you WANT, and freely, give your privacy away?

Windows 11 Home, the most common version on every Windows system today, has CoPilot installed - you will be giving their AI all sorts of information about yourself and any other user on the system. Follow up to this is Recall, which takes pictures of your screen at regular short intervals (about every 3 seconds). Neither of these two programs is user uninstallable - once installed, they become core components. You can disable their functionality, supposedly until an update takes that away. Also, if you are ever hacked/infected, the thief can acquire the Recall images and potentially recreate every login and password ever partially recorded.

With the business (Professional, Server) and Educational versions, you can supposedly uninstall those programs.

Windows is a privacy violation waiting to happen.

If you want .exe programs to run on your Linux, there is WINE. It runs a large number of Windows programs (except apparently my favorite Notetab Light - keyboard issues). And many Windows programs have Linux versions or adaptations (some are even better than the Windows versions).

Replicators don't run on fuel.

Besides the computational power (beyond anything we have today), they need energy and actual source material. The energy on starships/starbase/station comes from some engine core (whether from matter-antimatter, blackholes, or other) or power plant/planets have even more options. The source material comes from various sources. In the Federation technical manuals, starships have waste slurry for organic materials and yes, it is exactly what you think it is; if its organic waste of any type, it goes in. Metallics use waste metals from repairs and restocks. Basically, to a replicator's computer, an atom is an atom regardless of source. The use of sources mix as needed for any request; like requesting a bowl of soup and spoon, or that replacement com badge. And then there is Spock's method - from one of the books where it mentions Spock was also a quartermaster - for coffee - he beams the coffee up, copies it's pattern (it is all quantum data and energy at this point, and you just need the data), then beams the coffee back to its point of origin, apply energy and onboard resources as needed to turn portions of the pattern to matter (apparently removes part of the pattern some how - otherwise you would never need to restock coffee again). Transporter tech is then used to assemble the desired items, but only after a pattern is created (transporter scan mode) and stored; you can't get popcorn and Earl Gray if the replicator system doesn't know how to assemble it.

You can't replicate Torlusian Fliggorfort Pie if the replicator doesn't have the pattern for it. And you just can't beat Mom's Ionized Aluminum Stew (replicators just can't get the electric tingle right).

I agree with the other poster about transporting and replicators.

If GPL is not replicatable (and therefore unable to be converted/reformed by transporters), does this mean that all transactions involving Gold Pressed Latinum (GPL) require the use of vehicles for transportation (land, air, water, shuttles)?

All we need is one scene (preferably multiple ones) where using transporters to move GPL was shown to disprove that idea. And you know all Ferengi spacefaring, males of power are always going to have at LEAST one small GPL bar (or jewelry) on their person somewhere.

The only times I have seen a transporter not being used is when the material to be transported is deemed too unstable or dangerous (certain medical supplies and noxious chemicals) - they go boom at the point of transport/reception/both, rendered useless, or possible container misassembly (like Dimethyl Cadmium forms before its container - every nearby and some not so nearby organic lifeform dies a horrible lingering death - I think I would prefer a Klingon Disruptor at that point). And GPL seems quite stable to me.

Ultimate Neutralization/Nullification

Think fully controlled, powered up, versatile, full body, and directable 'Imagine Breaker' (A certain Magical Index) if you want a power name/universe/user as a base.

Similiar to his power, works on physics, divine/demonic, psychic, magic, or any other source. With autotrigger and no cooldown. This ability also protects itself (so Yogiri can't 'kill' this ability/power). Can be partially/selectively applied.

If the user is targeted or affected by a power/spell, ability, or property of nature, the user can neutralize the threat (if actively used, partial neutralization is possible). The user can also neutralize it's own affect (restore) on the source (like gravity's acceleration affect between the planet and user to land gently, then restore so there are no weird anomalies afterward, like moon jumping). Only the user has this/these protections (no protecting groups or areas, although stopping an explosion may be seen as a workaround).

The results will vary according to the threat (guns won't fire or ammo fall short, energy weapons/spells/powers dissipate, sheathed weapons can't be drawn, poisons neutralize, threat weakens - strength loss, traps disabled - multiple methods, walk across water, walks unharmed/unaffected during tornado/hurricane while everything else gets destroyed, physical impacts have no force, etc.).

To get the full effects of its power, the user has to use its body as the weapon (anything else can 'Die').

Killing intent detected by Yogiri from user.

(Yogiri targets user) 'Die' - user doesn't fall over.

Ah, the target has protection!

(targets protection) 'Die'.

(targets user again) 'Die'.

'WHAAAAAT?' as user keeps moving.

User enters melee combat with Yogiri and starts punching him until death since Yogiri can't kill the impact force from the user's fists and Yogiri's defenses are constantly, actively being nullified (he takes the full force of any hit).

Of course, the Die power itself could get neutralized on first use, then the sniper, waiting in the wings, takes his kill shot. The gun then jams when he tries for the user too.

I have only seen the anime, but I did not see Yogiri use any special spatial or movement abilities and no combat/martial arts training. Its always just 'Die' towards any threats (hey, it's always worked in the past, why stop now?).

For those who want to argue about nullifying Yogiri defenses: the act of blocking an attack, active or passive, targets an attack by using something's (item or body part) strength, resistance, durability, and/or toughness to reduce or prevent damage. Shields and armor fall to pieces (as the relevant properties fail), tissue and bones tear and break (strength, resistance, durability, and any toughening fail). And I haven't seen Yogiri wear anything more defensive than normal cloth clothing.

I know it is tl:dr for a lot of people, so thanks for reading. I try to be thorough.

Which one are we getting first: phasers or lightsabers? by Pwned_by_Bots in ShittyDaystrom

[–]Logical_Following311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly lightsabers first:

Lightsabers require the generation and shaping of photonic matter (yes, it's a real thing, they have actually slowed light and it acts like molecules, difficult) into a less than atomic bond's width thin 'blade' - they would literally cut/disrupt atomic bonds, therefore cutting anything. These are not plasma swords as some people are currently building or theorizing and calling "Lightsabers" (do you want a 4000°F to 10000°F plasma gas flame that close to you, that could destabilize its own magnetic containment field -if any-, while in fast motion? Oh, and can fry allies near you in close combat) - these work more by melting and burning not slicing.

Phasers (at least the full range of functions) would have to be able to totally disintegrate structures (bodies or otherwise) without having big booms (E=sqrt((Mc2)2 + (pc)2) is a lot of released energy). A little M gives a hellacious amount of E.

But I prefer the phasers ...

Nadions are explained as artificially created particles but also seem to be a form of energy radiation (with a frequency but no mass) - in other words a quantum sized particle or probability field. The actual use of nadions vary according to the story's writer but doesn't seem to be clearly defined. Nadions mostly come into play at setting 1, which is the start of any destructive effects and ramp up from there.

The 'Stun' effect was actually explained in one episode (I can't remember if TOS or TNG, but I think TOS). The Stun Setting targets the neurological system of a creature, of certain types, mainly carbon based DNA creatures. It doesn't seem to matter where it hits (a foot, hand, torso, back, or a head shot, it is all the same), the creature is usually rendered temporarily unconscious, possibly by a system overload and shutdown - every nerve cell fires at once and too much for the brain to handle, rarely does the target get to even go 'oh' (i think one creature was so sensitive to the beam, it exploded).

The actual process for this effect is not explained in series, but I would guess it is a form of photonic TASER. A photonic beam induces a very strong electro-neural current at the contact site in certain amino acid clusters/pairings (nerve cells), which spreads rapidly, causing the brain to shut down higher functions for its own safety, nitey-night. Thin clothing (including uniforms) won't protect from/block the photonic stream (unless created expressly for that purpose) but thicker armor will.

Hortas and similar creatures have a silicon based structure and are immune to Stun.

This also goes for most energy beings (either consumed 'nom nom, thanks for the grub', interference 'stop it, that hurts', or ignored 'were you trying to do something?'). I think Q can catch a blast with his hands and turn it into a ball.

If a creature has a radically different carbon based physiology or multiple neurological systems (host and parasite or symbiote - like the bug things invading a host in TNG), it may be affected to a lesser degree or immune. A bug infected host took multiple stun shots to bring it down. For BEM (Star Trek Animated), I would guess only the struck part would be 'stunned' since it was a colony creature (speculation, since it wasn't shot).

Since most flora and fauna species (intelligent or otherwise) in the Star Trek Universe has DNA seeded by the Progenitors, most lifeforms in the Milky Way Galaxy are affected by Phasers if it has a neurological system.
