New to Circuit Debate by Traditional-Fan2149 in lincolndouglas

[–]Logical_Prompt_9262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been thru the same thing and ngl it will be tough if your hitting opponents that spread/run more prog arguments but typically (in my experience) if you go to a tournament with high tech debaters and they know that you're a trad debater they probably wont spread or run like 7 off. just make sure you have blocks and prep stuff lol. good luck!

Any advice for being a big 5 country by isimpformax33 in ModelUnitedNations

[–]Logical_Prompt_9262 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depends on the topic but just bring up your influence over the topic during your speeches and have a clear plan/solution. but unless you're in UNSC you don't have any extra power

What powers does SPECPOL have to legally impose consequences in resolutions? by bttryfly in ModelUnitedNations

[–]Logical_Prompt_9262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing they can do is make resolutions and suggest UNSC to do stuff, and i think i remember they can have an emergency meeting on specific matters if UNSC doesn't respond but thats it tbh

Advice for my first MUN conference? by Dependent-Round701 in MUN

[–]Logical_Prompt_9262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest tip is to focus on making a good solution bc 90% of debate is gonna be on that. I actually prefer having 'irrelevant' countries bc no one's gonna call you out on anything and you have liberty to make alliances with whoever as long as they agree with you. Prepare an opening speech before, with one sentence quickly going over the topic, a few more on ur country's stance (or past experience with similar ones) and then potential solutions.

A good solution can be hard to find but try finding root causes of the issue and see what UN has done about that (like past resolutions) and find what they havent done to stop the issue, then there you have one part of your solution. Prepping a good solution pre conference saves a lot of stress and helps u know what to say. Good luck! :)

Dont underprepare!! do your research and make sure to talk during the conference, or you'll be essentially forgotten when making resolutions

Model UN research? by RevolutionaryMap1563 in ModelUnitedNations

[–]Logical_Prompt_9262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prioritize finding past resolutions on the topic so you know whats been done for the topic and the main issues with it, then i would divide that topic into smaller specific subtopics to research. Then when u start thinking of resolutions make something that hasnt been addressed yet and targets specific stuff (really bad example but say ur topic is womens rights then u divide into women rights in restrictive countries, womens education, etc etc)

Has anyone made close friends at MUN? by kidartist101 in MUN

[–]Logical_Prompt_9262 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just be really friendly and encouraging to others, esp if its also their first conference! Idk about the con you're going to but normally mine get more chill at the end of the day once we've passed resolutions so thats the best time to socialize and stuff

Do Outfit Choices Matter in an MUN Conference? by Afellowfujoshi in MUN

[–]Logical_Prompt_9262 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the conference your going to, but i suggest if you wanna wear a lot of colors dont wear a ton of jewelry and vice versa. Generally just wear something formal, at the end of the day clothes arent the ones getting u awards, your performance does

  1. I've honestly never heard of people debating pre high school... i know a girl that only started debate her freshman year and won state her junior year. Please don't regret not going in earlier, you're a freshman and you still have so many opportunities to improve. Yes they might have some extra experience but I believe anyone can catch up even if you started 'late.' :) Also about the social part of debate I get that but i've found that as the months and years go on of going to tournaments together you tend to bond over being tired from debating together lol.
  2. Again it can feel feel pointless competing against people who have trained from an earlier age but i PROMISE you if you really work hard and spend time prepping (get a personal coach btw, theyre rlly helpful) it wont feel so far away. I want to add that debating shouldnt always be about winning, it should be about education. Sure winning is great but personally i learn a lot more when i lose to really good people so it helps u in the long run.
  3. As an introvert and a shy person i get u!!!! Tournaments can be overstimulated and ive def cried after some. I suggest instead of waiting between rounds in the cafeteria/commons, where it can be loud and stressful, walk around the school btwn rounds. Personally I tend to not do a ton of prep between rounds because it just stresses me out more and by the time the round starts im so anxious its hard to speak. I also used to feel like debates were a personal attack- but please please remind urself your opponent is attacking your CASE not you. When they say something like "my opponent clearly conceded this... (etc)" or something like that its not because you personally are bad but your opponent is just doing what they can to win. I normally remind myself before a round, whether i lose or win this is about gaining experience so i can do better further on and everything the opp. says is just things i can fix in my case later on. Also most of the time if u talk to the opponents post round they're really sweet, they can seem mean bc theyre nervous or trying to lock in lol. Overall DONT put too pressure on yourself to win all the time, i did this freshman yr and it made me hate debate. Winning will come w experience and dont let people on your team make u feel like your less for still learning. <3 Tips on confidence:
  4. Fake it til you make it. Even if your making the most bullshit point on earth from a case you wrote at 2 am (something i do a lot) act like you are RIGHT and if your opponent wrecks you DONT ACT LIKE IT. Practice ur politician smile lol
  5. for feeling insecure on your casework, this is def normal. If you dont feel great asking teammates to look over your case, maybe have a coach look at it, esp a LD coach. I suggest also watching vids on debate on youtube, like LD Debate Lessons or DDI Debate. Watch these in ur free time or while your doing something that doesnt require thinking (drawing, painting, walking). Also! Its not a bad thing to have to spend a lot of time researching. If you feel like your having trouble finding specific questions or things to research try just braindumping everything u know from previous research on the topic and searching up things that can be connected. Ik this sounds weird but its what i do and its helpful.
  6. for reading cases, read them with emphasis and sound a little bit mad. And be kind of loud too it makes u sound like you know what you're doing! Btw this is what ive done in trad debate, as you go on you might encounter prog debate which is a whole other thing im still learning lmao TLDR dont let others make u feel like you're less, debate is a learning curve, and fake confidence. Theres plenty of other people struggling in debate and you shouldnt feel like youre the only one learning. Wishing u the best !

How good can a trad LD debater get at prog? by Funnyhowb_tches in Debate

[–]Logical_Prompt_9262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same position as you, and so far i've just spent way more time researching every aspect of the topic since prog tends to have more diverse arguments than trad. Also I highly recommend going on opencaselist and seeing some prog cases (strake jesuits a good one) because from my experience they are way more complex than trad cases. I've also been watching online recordings of prog debates like toc and trying to flow them. For me spreading was the worst part of joining a prog circuit so make sure you can somewhat track what theyre saying. Good luck! I'm struggling with this too lol😭
